Black grime/buildup on parquet floors

I’m looking for tips on how to best clean this black residue / buildup layer from my parquet floors. This is a rental, the house is over 100 years old in a humid climate. It seems to be only in certain areas, and even worn away. There’s some really nice patches (I have more photos if you want) and it would be a dream if most of the floor could look like that. I scrubbed a quadrant with Murphy’s oil soap and a bar towel and some of it lifted. I’m fine if I take a bit of elbow grease, just want to make sure it’s the best way. The grime does lift away when scraped with a fingernail. Any tips for getting some of this up, without doing damage, and subsequently caring for the floor in the best way? Thank you!
