Need Advice/ Opinions RE: Perm
I got a perm done on my hair 3 weeks ago. I have fine hair, and my hair tends to react very well to heat and products. I also naturally have Irish curls near my face/ my bang area and some areas in the bottom near my neck. I did extensive research on the process, what I wanted in terms of type of curl, aftercare, products, upkeep, and which salons near me did them and had consistent high reviews.
During the process of her putting the rods in, I noticed she ran out of rods and used another colour. I also noticed that for a bunch of the top sections, she would stop rolling them up flat and would wrap them around like if you were twisting it around if that makes sense. Right after she rinsed the neutralizer out and it began to dry a bit, I noticed it looked a bit wild and uneven. I assumed this was because of the mousse she put in it as my hair gets really crunchy with mousse (she didn’t ask me before applying it, just started putting it in, or I would’ve told her not to use it on me). After she diffused my hair it looked even more wild. I asked her if there was anything she could do to make it look less messy, and she scrunched it and told me to use mousse going forward.
I waited until I could wash it, and hoped that once the mousse was out of my hair it would be better. After washing my hair, I applied my curl cream and plopped it and let it air dry the rest of the way. I realized that the pieces that i thought looked wild and messy, were not curled and were either straight still or just had a light wave. There were some perfect, tight curls and then entire sections that looked almost like I put it on a curling iron for a second and didn’t finish.
I went back to the salon and talked to them about getting me in to fix it. The man at the desk immediately saw my hair and said he noticed how uneven it was and called the owner to get me in to fix it, and I told him to book me in for 2 weeks later at a minimum to give my hair time to recover before trying anything again.
I went back two weeks later and showed her the pieces that were still straight and told her that i wanted the same rod size used on those pieces that she used for the curls that I liked/stayed. She used those on all the pieces I asked for. I did notice though that she wasn’t really checking on my hair and when she put the solution on, I could feel parts of my head that didn’t feel very wet at all, but I obviously wouldn’t know whether or not she actually did soak those rollers or not.
After she rinsed the neutralizer out this time and got me back to the chair, it did initially look slightly curlier than the first time. She did say to me though “it’s still not very curly”. She said that if we needed to do it again we’d need to wait so my hair doesn’t break, which I also agree I can’t do anything else for a while. She insists that the pieces that aren’t curly are because my hair is fine. My question though, is if that was true, why are some sections holding perfectly and others are flat/ straight? If it was because my hair is fine, wouldn’t it be an issue with all of my hair?
My husband called the salon to ask what happened and what can be done to fix it (he paid for it and was upset for me). On the call, she said it was because my hair is fine, and then when he explained that some parts are super tight curls and other parts are straight, she then said it could be the products I’m using on it or that i got it wet too early. She then circled back and said that regardless of how many times she does it, the straight pieces won’t curl because my hair is fine. I have an appointment now to go back into the salon in a few days so she can see it.
So I would like to hear thoughts on whether this is due to my hair being fine or whether this was an issue with the saturation or solution/ stylist’s error and what I should do about this. Thanks in advance for any help/advice! 1st picture is of the first attempt (didn’t take many cause I didn’t feel good with the result) and the rest are pictures of the second attempt, you can tell a bit better where the straight pieces are and the curls that took that I like and wanted.
**To preface before anyone asks, I did not wet it or wash it for 72 hours afterwards and didn’t tie it up, brush it, or put products in it, and slept with a satin bonnet on at night.**
