24 (f) I’m currently taking Med-Surg 1 for the second time. I am a student with ADHD, and I have a test every week. I was doing better overall compared to the first time I took this course, which I ended up dropping because I performed poorly. I just took my midterm last Thursday, and I completely bombed it. It dropped my grade to 70% (I need a 78% to pass the course).

I am extremely disappointed and worried since I will be kicked out of nursing school if I don’t pass this class. I have been improving my exam scores overall, but I am still not at a passing standard. I don’t understand why I’m not passing the class.

Here is what I currently do to study for my weekly exams:

Important to note: My professor does NOT give students the slides or allow anyone to take pictures of them.

  1. Reading the textbook: My professor stresses this, so I’ve been using the ATI book to help me. I’ve been reading the modules and engaging carefully to understand the “why” behind diseases.
  2. Office hours: Aside from attending every class, I’ve been going to office hours to identify my weak points in test-taking. Sometimes I can’t explain why I chose certain answers other than test anxiety. I’ve been trying to come up with a study plan with my counselor and professor; however, it doesn’t seem to be working.
  3. Watching videos and using other resources: My professor provides many helpful links, but there are so many that I don’t have time to get through all of them. I try to focus on the most important and relevant ones. I’ve also been using NotebookLM to create podcast-style reviews of my notes and lectures.
  4. Creating practice questions: I’ve been using ATI Dynamic Quizzes and practice questions my professor provided to test myself. I read the rationales when I get questions wrong. I also use these, along with the syllabus, to create my own study guides.

I am highly disappointed in myself and extremely worried that I will not pass the class and will be kicked out of nursing school. As someone with ADHD since childhood, I have had to retake some classes during my prerequisites, but I earned a 3.4 GPA. I’ve also been working with my school’s academic advisor, who has helped me break down questions.

I’m not sure where I went wrong. The results just came out yesterday, and it’s extremely discouraging to see that I’m still not passing, especially since this is my second time taking the course.

I’m not sure why I’m struggling right now. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not understanding the concepts, not giving myself enough time, studying the wrong material, or a combination of these factors.

I really need help and am willing to take any advice I can get. This is the hardest class I’ve taken so far. I’ve been making sacrifices, yet it still isn’t enough. I’m hoping that anyone who has succeeded in Med-Surg 1 can share what they did to study so I can see what I might be doing wrong and how I can improve in the second half of the term. I am willing to do whatever it takes to bring my grades up. I would also appreciate some emotional support from anyone who has been in my position before or anyone willing to help.
