The Taekwondo Business Model for Kids

My kid (four years old) started Taekwondo last year. I will get her into BJJ around six but it's been very interesting seeing how Taekwondo operates from a business perspective - at least in the USA.

The BJJ gyms I've trained at have had small kids programs but have been more focused on adults. From my understanding, there is potentially a lot more money in kids programs.

I've never seen this in BJJ gyms but wondering if any of you have:

  1. after school pick up programs - Many of the TKD gyms in my area seem to go to kids schools, pick them up, and then bring them to the dojo (dojang for the nerds) for a couple hours doing a mix of TKD and other activities. Essentially serving as a day care.
  2. Summer/holiday camps at the TKD facility. Christmas, spring, and summer break.
  3. Birthday parties at the TKD facility.
  4. bigger split in age ranges - I actually thought about starting my daughter in BJJ but the class is split from 4-7 years old. Most of the other kids were 6 or 7 which is a massive difference. For the TKD gym, they do 3-5, 6-8, 8-12, and 12+. The 3-5 year old classes are basically gymnastics based games with a bit of TKD specific techniques at the end.

I know TKD has a lot of issues with quality control but I don't really see why this type of kids program could not exist alongside a traditional adults and even a more serious teens program.

Dulwich Puxi Closing

I've seen a couple rumours on Chinese social media this morning that Dulwich Puxi is closing (effective from August 2026). I've heard conflicting reports if this is just the high school or the whole school.

I know many of the Dulwich campuses are struggling but this seems like a major shock. I wonder how many Empire outposts will fall as the birth rate continues to drop and the economy continues to spiral in China.
