Played a few games recently at a restaurant and ended up talking to people at the next table who wanted to jump in. Didn’t expect that at all.

Thinking about installing artificial turf? Before you sign anything, here are a few questions that can save you a LOT of money and headaches:
- What’s your base prep process?
This is everything. Bad prep = sinking, bumps, drainage issues later.
- How deep is the base?
You’re typically looking for around 3–4 inches. Too shallow = problems.
- How do you handle drainage?
Turf doesn’t fix water issues—it exposes them. Make sure they have a plan.
- What infill are you using?
This affects heat and smell (especially if you have pets).
- How are the edges secured?
Bad edges = lifting and wrinkling over time.
- What’s included in your price per sqft?
Ask if it includes demo, haul away, base, weed barrier, infill, etc.
Some “cheap” quotes leave a lot out.
- Are there any additional fees?
Always ask this upfront so nothing surprises you later.
- Are you licensed and insured?
Super important (especially in Nevada).
- What actually causes turf to smell?
A good answer = drainage + proper install + maintenance.
If they say “it never smells”… 🚩
- How long will this realistically last?
Most installs: 10–15 years depending on use.
If you’ve had turf installed before, what’s something you wish you knew—and what would you add to this list?
