Landlord Trying To Charge Us For “Something” 8 mo After Move Out | Location: KY, USA

I’ll try to keep this short but I lived there from 2019-2025. Location: Kentucky, USA

Pertinent info:

My wife and I moved out of an apartment 8 months ago to buy a house. We left a forwarding address. We are just now hearing back from the company that we owe them $3k. They are communicating this via text message AI and automated calls. All attempts to contact the company are met with voicemail.

From what I understand, they had 30 days to give us an itemized list of deductions and fees, which they did not do. We have proof via email that we left a forwarding address. They clearly have our phone numbers. What can I do moving forward? I don’t know what we would owe besides maybe back rent, but that wouldn’t be $3k. When we told them we were moving, there was a surprise inspection (illegal) and suddenly we were served a fix or quit for our cat’s litter box that had never been an issue previously. It was blatant retaliation.

Longer info:

My wife and I are a lesbian couple and the manager was (in my opinion) homophobic and would constantly find ways to be negligent in their dealings with us.

For example: our neighbor flooded our apartment in 2023. Our apartment was uninhabitable. It took several calls with corporate and our apartment insurance and three weeks to get us into a new unit despite the flooding not being our fault. Our neighbor’s child left the faucet on all day. This neighbor also apparently had roaches and they flooded our apartment also when the ceiling collapsed. We accidentally brought them with us to the new unit and we had to fight with them to get any pest control.

Example two: a neighbor’s boyfriend became belligerently drunk and threatened us for being “queers”. He threatened to kill us. It took a police report and multiple calls to corporate for any action to be taken, even a slap on the wrist for the neighbor.

I’m pretty sure that this is just another example of them trying to retaliate against us for asking them for proper living conditions.

Again, my questions are: how do I contact them if all I can get are chat bots or voicemails and they don’t respond to my emails? Legally, what are my obligations? Legally, what are their obligations? Is there anything I can do to be proactive? Thanks
