Inaugurating a Tunnel Boring Machine? Madnesss!!
Why does a tunnel boring machine need an inauguration? 🤔
So apparently the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, is coming to “inaugurate” a tunnel boring machine for the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel project.
Don’t get me wrong, the tunnel connecting Thane and Borivali is actually a great infrastructure project. It could genuinely reduce travel time and traffic. No complaints there.
But what I don’t understand is, why does a machine need a ribbon-cutting ceremony?
It’s literally a tunnel boring machine. Its job is to dig. You switch it on, it digs. That’s it. This isn’t a new airport or a hospital opening. It’s equipment doing what it was built to do.
And on top of that, there are massive billboards everywhere announcing this “inauguration.” Who is this for? Taxpayer money is being spent to advertise… the start of digging?
Wouldn’t that money be better spent on:
- Actually speeding up the project?
- Improving roads around construction zones?
- Or literally anything that benefits the public directly?
It just feels like unnecessary optics. A lot of noise for something that should just quietly begin and get done efficiently.
