Placement change
Context: 3rd year mental health nursing student on 2 week alternative field placement (adult general medicine) and in early pregnancy
So I started my first shift on the adult ward today and couldn’t finish it. I’m early in my pregnancy and struggling with nausea but this was a whole new level. The ward was warm, barely an opportunity to sit down (although they did say I can rest whenever I feel I need to) and the smells were something else. Obviously the patients were very unwell and majority of them unable to attend to the own hygiene needs and were incontinent etc I spent the whole time feeling as though I was going to either pass out or throw up as well as gagging in front of patients which was mortifying. The uni state we need to do 37.5hrs in each alternative field as an NMC requirement. I’ve completed my 2 other alternatives this adult placement is my last but I just don’t know how I’m going to do it with feeling so ill as I did and only lasting 5 hours today. Do you think the university would allow me to do a simulation week as an alternative and as a reasonable adjustment kind of situation? I know the NMC does allow up to 25% of learning to be simulation? Has anyone been in this situation? Thank you
