Dragon desperately needs a home. I am getting so worried.

Location: Allen County, IN

(Last picture is how he looked summer before recent attack. He is cute, just in rough shape atm.)

TLDR. Sweet stray cat with feline leukemia needs home. Living in my garage, husband has allergies, can’t keep. 7 rescues contacted, haven’t heard back. Only place who will take him will euthanize due to diagnosis.

I desperately need help. (Not financial.) I hate posting like this but I don’t know what to do. I need to find someone to take Dragon. Whether it be a foster, rescue, or hopefully someone who wants to keep him forever.

Dragon was a stray I wanted to make a community cat. He was routinely attacked by other cats and after a rough attack let me help him. In the process of trying to TNR he was diagnosed with Feline Leukemia - so he cannot be a community cat anymore.

My husband has severe allergies to cats. We’ve been keeping Dragon in our garage for the time being. Our furnace is in the garage and when we turn it on, cat smells come through the vents. So we have to keep it off. It’s not sustainable as the weather is getting more intense.

Dragon is really thriving in the garage, it’s actually crazy to me. He doesn’t seem to need a lot. He just seems so happy to have a safe place with food, water, and a comfy place to rest. He is litter box trained with no accidents. He enjoys being pet and brushed (will purr up a storm) and then he will walk away and stare at you when he’s had enough attention. His favorite spot is a wheelbarrow with a comforter inside.

I’ve reached out to about 7 different rescues, posted on FB, paid for an online adoption profile for him, and the only one who can take him is Animal Control - who will euthanize him due to his feline leukemia.

If you know anyone else I can reach out to or think he may be a good fit for you, or just have questions please let me know. Words of support or advice are also welcome. I am starting to feel so nervous. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this.

Holding Stray “Hostage” in Garage - Vent/Advice

TW: Injuries (slide 2 and 3)

Location: Allen County, IN

TLDR: Stray cat can’t become community cat - FeLV Positive. Being held in garage to heal/follow vets orders for meds/find a forever home or rescue to take him. Cant come in house due to husbands severe cat allergies. How do I make the garage more enriching? Tips on other rescues to contact? Have contacted AAC, Humane FW, Wags and Wiggles, and The Animal Protection League. Also created an online adoption page on Adopt A Pet.

Hello, this is Dragon! He is a stray cat my family has been trying to help for some years now. Long story short, he has been the victim of attacks by other cats, one finally got him good, and Dragon allowed me to catch him and take him to the vet.

The plan was to TNR him and release him back into our neighborhood, but at the vet he was diagnosed with Feline Leukemia (FeLV.) Because of his diagnosis, we cannot release him without putting other unvaccinated roaming cats at risk.

He is currently being held hostage in our garage (and treated for his infection) because we can’t bring him inside. My husband loves cats but is super allergic - like can’t breathe, after so long, even with medication.

I have reached out to multiple rescues and shelters as well as created an adoption page for him online. Still, I’m not sure how long we will have to keep him in our garage. He doesn’t seem to hate it too much yet as he is recovering, but I fear it is only a matter of time.

What can I do to make the garage a more enriching place for him? I’ve made him a bed out of a wheelbarrow, created a few places to hide with old curtains, and have a cushion by a window for him to look outside if he wishes. I have a litter box and some cat toys, but I feel like it’s not enough.

I feel so guilty having him in there but I currently have no one else to take him. The only shelter who would take him (because they have to) was upfront with me that he would be euthanized if brought there. So that is not an option.

If you read this far, thank you! And I am open to any ideas/advice/tips on rescues or people who make take him in. I am calling everyone I can who may be able to help or point me in the right direction.

▲ 42 r/FIVcats

UPDATE: Last night in the chaos of it all, I misunderstood the vet. He does NOT have FIV but has leukemia FELV. He is doing really well with the vet care and I am picking him up tonight.

Euthanizing him is currently not on the table unless something drastically changes. I am going to be keeping him in our garage and trying to make it a comfy place for him until I can find him a permanent indoor home or a rescue to assist. I am in the Allen County IN area if anyone has any tips or leads.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to comment and share their knowledge, experiences, and words of support. It has made me feel like I can really help him and that I don’t need to be discouraged. I have also learned so much about FIV and really can’t thank you all enough. ❤️

TW: Injured/sick cat (Slide 2 and 3. Slide 1 is when he was healthy.)

Location: Allen County, IN

TLDR: Sick stray has FIV. Can no longer be community cat. Husband is allergic and we can’t bring cat inside. Will be housed in our garage for time being. Better to euthanize now or try to find rescue to take him and keep him in garage until then?

Hello, I am looking for advice and hope this post is allowed.

This is Dragon. He is a stray cat I have been trying to help and was hoping to make a community cat. He was recently attacked, injured, and finally let me help him.

I took him to the vet today to get his injuries treated and eventually neutered/vaccinated. However, the vet called me and let me know he has FIV. Ethically, I can’t make him a community cat anymore. I also can’t bring him inside due to my husband’s severe allergies.

My vet recommended finding him a home where he can be indoors or humanely euthanizing him, due to his current condition.

I pick him up from the vet tomorrow and will be giving him medication for a week and he will be confined to my garage until I can find somewhere to take him.

I don’t know what to do. My husband thinks we should give him lots of love, attention, and treats, then euthanize him. He is already 3 years old, at a minimum, and sick. (Age on him being an adult when we first spotted him.)

I am afraid of letting him go too early and not giving him a chance. To me, he has a will to live. I’ve applied to 3 different rescues, but I don’t know if any will take him. Even so, would it more cruel to keep him in a garage, take him to a rescue, then another home, all while he could be sick/dying? He’s been living outside in our neighborhood since we moved in years ago.

I don’t want to add more suffering to his life but I also don’t want to end his life early if it’s not necessary. Thank you if you took the time to read this. I appreciate any advice.

TW: Cat injury

UPDATE: Dragon has leukemia FeLV. He is doing great at the vet and even leaned in when someone tried to pet him there. He is eating great. I am going to keep him in my garage for the time being and give him his medications each day. I am going to try to make it a comfy place for him but ultimately the plan is to find him a new indoor forever home. I have already applied to rescues and am going to make more calls today.

Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to comment. It really was incredibly helpful to me and made me feel so encouraged at a time where I was feeling frazzled and lost. Thank you all ❤️

TLDR: Stray cat attacked. Vet later. Shelter said they will likely euthanize. No-kill shelter has 2-3 week wait and recommends making him a community cat. Seeking advice and or creative outdoor housing solutions. Husband is super allergic to cats. Can’t bring cat inside.

This is Dragon. He has been wandering around outside since we first moved here years ago. One winter I heard him crying on our front porch, but he ran off when I came outside. I left out tuna and ever since we have slowly been building his trust.

A week ago, he showed up looking like he had been in a fight. Last night, he showed up with his eye looking scary, but he wouldn’t let me see. This morning, I found him curled up next to the outdoor cat house we got him, not moving. I got a better look at his eye and knew I needed to trap him today and get him help.

I managed to get him in the garage and then I called animal control. I was advised that if I don’t want him euthanized to take him to a vet. We have a vet appointment this evening. I called our no-kill shelter who told me they have a 2-3 week wait time for new intakes, but that he may be better suited to stay a community cat and I should try that first.

I feel a bit discouraged and conflicted. He is scared of people but so sweet when he warms up. I almost think he had a home a long time ago, but I don’t know. I can’t keep him in the garage forever and can’t bring him inside. (My husband likes cats but is SUPER allergic.) I don’t mind having him outside but I would hate to see him keep being attacked. I am thinking of trying to build him a better cat house, but I have limited funds, especially now that we will have vet bills.

I am looking for any words of encouragement, advice, or even creative cat house ideas to keep him safe. Thank you for anyone who took the time to read this.
