I have experienced people with the most atrocious behaviour in various forms (either me or how they have treated other people).

It seems that these are the same people that humblebrag and self-praise the most with glorious colourful vocabulary that do not line up in real life. Or are these just people I come across?

Everyone treats everyone differently. You are not going to be bootlicked if you don't sit up there.

Has LinkedIn forgotten that recognition is credible when it comes from others? Or is this just a dog and pony show?

I do not have LinkedIn as I do not like how unauthentic it is and the lack of privacy.

A thought recently strike me: When we looked at a business or restaurant and if we see a 5 stars rating on Yelp or Google or Amazon, we are more likely to patronize it or buy it. Would it be the same concept as a LinkedIn recommendation? (Nevertheless, when I see a perfect 5 star review, I also doubt it due to the ease to give 5 stars and people prefer not to say bad yet truthful things. It tends to cause a negative reaction from the owner. However, I do go through 1 star reviews to see what is it that matters.)

Privacy is important for me. As references come in at the later stage of the hiring process, does a person with LinkedIn written testimonials seen to be more favourable considering they already have references without asking?

How much weightage does LinkedIn recommendation has as compared to a private reference?

Hiring managers please weigh in.
