Green hair algae and tank changes

Hi all,

You have helped me a lot in the past, looking for some advice before I make any dumb decisions.

My 15 gallon planted tank has a ton of green hair algae and I think it’s time to replace some of the main items to “start over.” I’ve turned down my lighting schedule quite a bit, was probably over feeding and cut down on that, tried some snails, shrimp, and manual removal. The main offender is a wood piece that ended up growing a lot of algae. It’s just continuing to grow. There’s some algae on the other plants and on the filter sponge.

How should I go about this? Is it ok to replace the log with another feature? Will that throw things off too quickly?

The filter sponge is still in pretty good shape. Am I dooming my tank if it continues to grow hair algae on it? I’ve been trying to remove it as I can with my fingers. Should I change the filter sponge?
