First-time Papillon owner. Would really appreciate advice on breeder practices

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the process of getting my first Papillon and would really value some input from those with more experience in the breed.

I’ve been speaking with a breeder who seems very caring and responsive. The puppies are raised inside, socialised with people (including children) and other dogs, and the parents sound to have good temperaments.

That said, there are a couple of things I’m unsure about and would appreciate some objective feedback on:

  • The breeder is not registered, so the puppies won’t come with pedigree papers
  • No genetic testing has been done on the parents
  • The breeder mentioned they don’t worm the puppies, as they prefer to avoid chemicals, and haven’t had issues in the past
  • Puppies are vet checked before going to their new homes

We’re not planning to breed or show, just looking for a well-adjusted companion dog, but I still want to make sure we’re making a responsible decision especially given the price. The breeder is offering the puppies on the lower end of the scale from what a fully ANKC (Australia's equivalent AKC) registered puppy is being sold for.

We would also need to transport the puppy via air after it's 12 week check and vaccine.

For those with experience:

  • Are these things deal-breakers for you, or something you’d be comfortable with depending on the breeder?
  • What would you want to see or confirm before moving forward in a situation like this?

Really appreciate any insights. I am just trying to learn and make the best decision possible.

Thanks in advance!
