Built a latency-free, e-ink typewriter for screenwriting - AUTEUR

Wanted to see if I could build an ergonomic deck for writing on a large e-ink screen with zero keystroke lag. I was even able to implement real time Fountain rendering for screenwriting! It wakes from idle instantly but the cold boot is killing me.

- Pi Zero 2W running custom writing application

- Inkplate 6 running custom firmware

- SSD

- LiPo Battery

- Charge/Boost Module

- GK64 mechanical keyboard

AUTEUR: a latency-free, e-ink deck I've been building for a while

This is AUTEUR, it's an e-ink typewriter for working on screenplays, treatments and general authorship. Pi Zero 2W driving an Inkplate and custom application written ground-up for the constraint of e-ink. Boots straight into the editor.

Eliminating latency was my obsession. That and adequate screen size. Driving the e-ink like a standard display but for writing offline.

Hotkey-driven navigation, searchable browser, no menus. Fountain syntax for realtime screenplay formatting, Markdown, plain text. Files stored on internal memory with autosaving, exported over USB-C.

Keyboard is a GK64 with hot-swap Kailh switches and PBT keycaps. 60% with arrow keys. Probably going to switch to a 1.75U right shift.

The enclosure in these shots is ABS right out of the oven!

Hello, again! It's been awhile... I reached out to Crowd Supply to see if they'd be interested in taking on this project and they said: yes! I spent the last couple of weeks trying to get my ducks in a row so that something that is essentially a handful of ferrets in a trenchcoat can be streamlined into an embedded device. I'm calling it AUTEUR due to my film background.

I'm trying to convert all the components into a single carrier board to alleviate the costs involved in cobbling together a bunch of bespoke components. I've got a boost/charging module for battery, USB expansion hub for peripheral connections and an SSD that I'm trying to convert to internal memory for plug and play USBC exports and charging.

Funnily enough, after Crowd Supply accepted my proposal I finally received the display board that I intended to build with in the first place but it comes down to availability and manufacturing now due to the completely different architectures of the displays.

Hopefully, this can deliver peak and affordable performance. Still working on quotes for enclosures and PCB's. Stay tuned and feel free to chime in!
