For Americans who uses ethnicity prefixes like (italian/irish/african-american), at what point do you stop using it? 3 generations? 5? 10?
I spoke to someone who claims to be Italian American despite the last person in their family to actually be born in Italy to be 125 years ago. thats like 5 generations ago....
and it just made me think, this being such an American thing to do, at what point do you stop using that identifier? why not go further back and just be italian-british then since at some point the american in you is just british right? why not roman-american? or why not just african american since you go far back enough thats just where everyones from?
i always found this so odd for a people so proud of who they are, as Americans, you also really like to use the identifier to make sure everyone know you arent entirely American.
