Kyoto (May 23–25): Surviving the Heatwave/Rain + Ohara/Nara worth it in the wet?

Hi everyone,

My partner and I will be in Kyoto for three days starting May 23rd. The forecast is looking like a mix of "once-in-a-decade" heat (29°C+) and a 60% chance of rain. I’m a bit anxious about the humidity and looking for some quick advice:

  1. Packing: Shall I pack a full rain gear or would a light parka work? Should I pack heavy fabrics or light?
  2. Rainy Day Itinerary: If it pours, are Ohara (Sanzan-in) and Nara Park still worth the trip? I’ve heard the moss in Ohara is beautiful in the rain, but I’m worried about the commute.
  3. Indoor Gems: Aside from the usual Nishiki Market and Kyoto National Museum, are there any other air-conditioned or covered "hidden gems" to dodge the heat/rain?

Packing for Osaka (May 21-22): Handling the Heatwave + Rain Forecast?

Hi everyone,
My partner and I are in Osaka on May 21st and 22nd. I’m seeing reports of a "once-in-a-decade" heatwave, but the forecast also says rain. I’m a bit anxious about how to stay comfortable and looking for some advice.

  1. Packing: Should I be packing a rain gear or shall a parka should be fine? Should I be packing for hot weather (a light t-shirt) or for a pleasant windy weather (a heavy t-shirt with a jacket)?
  2. Itinerary: We have two full days before moving to Kyoto. Since we might need to dodge rain, what are the best indoor-friendly or "covered" spots? We will be staying near Nipponbashi Denden Town and we’re currently looking at the following spots:
  • Dotombori / Shinsaibashi-suji (for the covered arcades)
  • Osaka Castle (Kaiyukan)

Are there any "hidden gems" or specific museums/indoor spots we shouldn't miss during a heatwave or rainy spell?

Appreciate any tips!
