Deummer looking to jam

Hey, I’m a drummer looking for people to jam with and potentially build original music long-term.

I have a background in school jazz ensemble drumming (mainly basic swing and traditional grip fundamentals) and about 6 years of classical double bass experience, so I’m comfortable with reading music, ensemble playing, and general theory.

Drums are my newer main instrument, but I’ve been practicing consistently and focusing on timing, groove, and coordination.

I’m into rock, metal, grunge, and classic rock, mainly groove-based stuff.

I’m looking for people who want to jam regularly and eventually develop original material.

I don’t have regular access to an acoustic kit right now, but I practice consistently and can show up ready to play.

I’m a minor, so I’m only looking for age-appropriate jam situations.

Traditional vs match grip?

Hello everyone,

I’m relatively new to learning drums, and something that’s been bugging me a lot is my grip.

I originally started learning drums to play in a jazz ensemble at my school, so naturally I was taught traditional grip. Now that I’m no longer playing in a jazz setting and I’m getting more interested in heavier genres like metal, I’ve started wondering: does playing traditional grip really matter for heavier music?

The main issue is that I honestly don’t really like matched grip. It feels awkward and uncomfortable, especially in my left hand. My fingers don’t stay on the stick properly, and it feels like I have way less control compared to traditional grip. I know part of that is just inexperience and needing more practice, but I’m not sure if I should keep pushing through it or just stick with traditional grip.

I should probably also mention that I played double bass for about 6 years, but I’ve only been playing drums for a few months. Most of my rudiments and stick control practice has been with traditional grip, although I do still practice matched grip occasionally just nowhere near as much.

I’d appreciate any advice or experiences from people who’ve gone through something similar.
