Is Walmart good in a Zombie Apocalypse?
Most people instantly say no, and honestly I get it. Too many people, too many entrances, everyone knows it has basically everything people would be desperate for.
But I think what people kinda miss is that Walmart depends completely on Timing. Walmart before everyone panics, Walmart while everyone is panic buying, and Walmart after society already fell apart are not the same thing at all.
Panic Walmart is what everyone usually imagines. People freaking out, carts everywhere, people fighting over food and water, nobody paying attention, everyone just trying to get out with whatever they can. As a long term shelter? Yeah, a terrible idea. You’re not gonna stand on a checkout counter and convince everyone to build a safe haven with teamwork and friendship lol.
But weirdly, panic Walmart does have one advantage. In all that chaos, you kinda blend in.
If everyone is already grabbing stuff and leaving, not paying attention and panic buying/looting, you’re just another person in the chaos. Still dangerous obviously, but most of the danger comes from trying to be a hero, drawing attention to yourself, or pretending youre "that guy". But if you keep your head down, it might be one of the last chances to grab supplies before things get way worse. Because let's be honest, yeah, people would be panicking. But if the real world is any example, when it happens it's usually oportunistric people following the crowd. Not desperate people.
Abandoned Walmart might honestly be even worse in terms of danger. By then the shelves are picked clean, the power is out, the parking lot is just a giant open area, it's pitch black inside, and desperate people are still gonna show up because the name Walmart tells everyone “there used to be supplies here.”
So you probably don’t live in abandoned Walmart. You watch it from somewhere else. It becomes more useful as a warning sign than a base. If people keep showing up there, that tells you there’s movement, the situation, maybe groups nearby, maybe zombies getting attracted to the area. It's a beacon of information.
Pre-outbreak Walmart is probably the best version, but not as a shelter. You can’t just walk in while society is still normal and claim the place like it’s a Fallout settlement. You’d just get arrested. Society is still functioning.
But as a supply run? That’s where Walmart is actually insane.
Before the panic fully hits, the shelves are stocked, lights are on, employees are still there, and people are still pretending everything is normal. That’s the window. You’re not trying to live there. You’re trying to get food, water, medicine, batteries, gas cans, camping stuff (ya know, the essentials) before everyone else realizes they should’ve done the same.
The problem is, if you start loading 10 carts like a lunatic, people are gonna notice. And when people notice panic, they copy panic. That’s basically how panic buying starts and that's what turns into looting. Covid is a perfect example. People see empty shelves, then the empty shelves create more panic.
So the smarter move probably isn’t draining one Walmart dry. It’s spreading it out. A little from one store, a little from another, a little from another and so on. Plus since the world is about to end, might as well max out those credit cards. No one will be around to collect them anyway.
So yeah, is Walmart a good zombie apocalypse shelter?
No.
But is Walmart useful if you understand what stage of the outbreak you’re in?
Yeah, I'd say if you take advantage of it just right, it could potentially be a real game changer.
