Cohort of Cape Fear Shiners @ YMACC. They’re an inquisitive and VERY HUNGRY shiner species native to North Carolina that might just be coloring up for spawning! When they get ready to spawn their scales turn a vibrant and flashy gold. Look out for these rare and imperiled fish near grassy cobble patches in the Deep, Haw, and Cape Fear rivers this spring!

Earlier this week we moved some of our propagated Atlantic Pigtoes (Fusconaia masoni ) and Yellow Lances (Elliptio lanceolata) out to our wild grow-out dock! These endangered mussels will complete their lab-assisted growth under natural conditions at this facility and be ready for release in the summer. They grow up so fast! 🥹 Video credit- Chris Eads
