I have a lot of problems with Part 2, but this one pisses me off.

I remember reading this chapter weekly. I remember believing that Part 2 was going to be about this young girl's descent into darkness wherein she becomes a more ruthless and selfish version of herself. All the pieces were there. You had a compelling new protagonist who was placed into opposition with the old protagonist. You had a scene where she states that she is WILLING TO COMMIT MURDER if it means preventing those around her from suffering, something which you'd think would tie into a deeper character arc. You had potential internal conflict with the Denji romance subplot. You had a potential supporting cast with Yoshida, Nayuta, and the Devil Hunter club. Etc..

And then... nothing. This scene, which I assumed was going to be a major turning point in the narrative, was only there to give Asa a reason to start dating Denji. Because, actually, it turns out that the REAL purpose of her character is to be "Denji love interest #7" who does nothing but pine for him in the background while Denji is sad and gets horny with the devil actively ruining her life. That conflict of interests with Denji and Asa not knowing each other's identities? Leads nowhere. Those side characters you thought would be relevant? They unceremoniously die.

Sure maybe you can say that I had dumb expectations and Fujimoto never intended to go that route, and maybe you'd be right. But, like, the story we got in the end simply wasn't good on its own terms. Fuckin potential manga I swear.

A few individual scenes would need to be rewritten or removed like Asa calming Denji down when they were fighting the Falling Devil or the traumabonding scene in the last arc, but the overall narrative would remain more or less the same.

You'd still have Yoru and Death saving Denji from the prison. You'd still have the handjob and the whole Yoruden romance. You'd still have Denji turning into CSM Black after Nayuta's death. You'd still have Yoru beating Pochita and getting sent to the Aging Devil dimension. You'd still have Yoru comforting him afterwards. You'd still have the Yoruden date chapters. You'd still have Denji vs Yoru as the final fight. You'd still have the conclusion of Denji saving her because he wants to have sex. You'd still have the bugs eating everyone. You'd still have the reset. Etc.
