General rant I need off my chest.
Okay. So there's three main points in my rant I'm gonna have. My mother, our shelter, and the nearest underground cellar.
To start out with my mom, her and I got into an argument about whether she would take shelter with a tornado warning or not. I told her that she should so that if a tornado would happen, she wouldn't die. She said she won't because "I'm old, and fat. I don't want to get inside the pantry and on my hands and knees just for nothing to happen. And even if I do die, that's God's will." I told her that a tornadic death is by far one of the most painful. You're lofted into the air and blended by tiny shrapnel flying around at mach 2. And even if it isn't being skinned, you'll be beaten with bigger pieces of debris traveling at the same speed, and when you land, it won't feel nice if you somehow survive the landing. She's my mom, and I care about her, and I don't know how to help her sure, God may be real and may be ready, but through a tornado? Die of natural causes. I doubt God would put you through a tornado to get to the heavenly gates. If he was truly ready, I feel like "natural causes" would be the most realistic.
The shelter that we most likely would use is the pantry and hallway closet. They are the most interior, low to the ground area in the house away from windows. We live in a duplex, albeit the construction SEEMS to be very well built, but I don't know for sure. From what I'm aware of, it was built in the 60's-80's. It's (possibly load bearing) brick mansory and has a (seemingly) reinforced concrete slab foundation. I feel like it could survive up to a mid-end EF3 before there's any MAJOR structural failure. Though, once again, I don't know.
The nearest storm CELLAR is about a quarter mile down the road in a farmstead's front field. The second closest seems to be a more OSHA regulated and SPECIFICALLY BUILT storm cellar compared to the others. We'd likely go to the second closest one (if we had to and had the time to do so) due to the fact that it's only across the street from the other one.
Sorry, I know this is like... a word vomit to read, but it's about mid-May, so it's peak storm season for here in Kansas. I'm trying to get that out as quickly as possible. I know the tag said, "I just need to vent", but I never saw any "General Advice" tag, so I just chose the one that would make the most sense to me.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. Good day to you. 😊
Yesterday, we got clipped by the south end of the same storm that produced a tornado warning near Nevada Missouri, and got some decently sized hail from what I've heard. Well, while I was looking outside at the storm, I saw THIS behemoth looking thing in the center of the image. It wasn't a mesocylone since it was disconnected from the restbof the storm, and disappeared like it had "fizzled out" and disintegrated. Any ideas? I'll make a follow up post of the cloud itself in video format where I got this screenshot from.
