Got suspended by my hosting provider, how do you pick providers you can actually trust ?

4 months building a project, launched and started getting traction.

Woke up the next morning and everything was offline!

No email beforehand, no warning, support took 72h to reply and the reply was basically "your account has been flagged, we can't share details". That's it...

The thing that hit me hardest wasn't losing money. It was realizing i had built 4 months of work on top of infrastructure i had zero control over. one decision by someone i'll never speak to and it's gone

Since then i've been trying to figure out what actually matters when picking a provider. jurisdiction, who owns the hardware, whether i can pay without leaving a paper trail, what the abuse process looks like

What criteria do you actually use when picking a VPS for projects that matter to you ?

Finally went full nomad after 5 years of building !

Spent 5 years building stuff on the side while working a normal job. Some flopped, one started making enough to live on, then another

Kept telling myself i'd make the jump when it felt "safe enough". It never did. Booked the ticket anyway

I’m proud of myself! As soon as I arrived -> true to the cliché

I grabbed a scooter, put on my flip-flops and shorts, and set off to live the life I’ve always wanted!

Why hosting providers require a passport scan for a 10€/month VPS in 2026 ?

so i've been trying to move a side project to an EU based VPS for better latency

first tried hetzner, account rejected within minutes, no explanation, just "we can't accept your registration at this time"

second one same story, went through the whole signup flow, uploaded ID for KYC, waited 48 hours, rejected

third one finally worked but the KYC process took 4 days and had to send a copy of my passport for a 10€/month VPS

i get that there are fraud concerns but this feels completely disproportionate

is this getting worse or have i just been unlucky this month? curious if others have had the same experience recently or if some providers are actually still chill about this
