How to list work for family business on resume?

I worked for a few years as a kind of secretary for a family member’s small self-owned practice. I was never paid and just did it to help out, but I’d like to list the job and skills in my resume. Could I do this? Would it look suspicious to employers since it won’t show up on a background check or employment verification?

Too many applications?

Just graduated with BSN. Looking to apply for Fall 2026 to nurse residency programs in/near Houston, TX. Will submitting applications to different locations within the same hospital system (Houston Methodist, Memorial Hermann, etc) hurt my chances? Can recruiters see all of the locations I’ve applied to? Should I just choose one or two locations per hospital?

Didn’t get hired for this round of nurse residency. It’s way too competitive in Houston at the moment. I’m applying for fall, but the programs wouldn’t start until October if I manage to get one, so I need to work in the meantime. I didn’t work during nursing school and don’t have a background in healthcare. I don’t think I could get a PCT position since I’ve already graduated and will take the NCLEX soon. What jobs should I do while waiting?

Memorial Hermann only lets you list your first and second preferences for locations per application. Should I submit multiple applications, each with different locations, to increase my chances of getting an interview? The job market is insanely competitive in the med center in Houston.

It’s for a nurse residency position on a med surg unit. I was told to wear scrubs, so I’m thinking maybe I’ll also be doing a shadow shift. Any insight into what questions I should be asking would also be helpful.
