WARNING!!! An Underrated Game Approaches!
I've been hunting around locally in an attempt to diversify the genres present in my Genesis collection. I came across this King Salmon game and thought a fishing game would be perfect to add.
Threw it in, and there was some difficulty. Couldn't figure out how to play. After quickly reading the manual I gave King Salmon another shot. Reading the manual made a huge difference.
This is such a great game! It's kinda arcadey. The mechanics for reeling in a fish are pretty good for a game that doesn't use a reel.
You don't just sit on the lake waiting for an eternity for a bite. You have to pick your lure type and adjust for how deep the fish are. Instead of parking your boat and sitting around, you maneuver to the front of a school of fish, and let them chase you. Once you get a bite you reel it in, and it gets weighed for the competition. The goal is obviously to catch the biggest fish. It's tournament style, and each round has a set time limit. You also have to watch for other boats and avoid collisions. There are also some light RPG mechanics. You can gain experience to upgrade your angler.
Anyway, I ended up playing the game for like 3 hours today. Not what I expected. I say if you can appreciate the lesser represented genres of games, then King Salmon might be worth checking out. I was pleasantly surprised.
