The making of "The New Abnormal" Inside Info Post
Hello everyone! Worried_Tell1238 here
While the moderators have requested that I refrain from sharing excerpts of never-before-heard music, they have confirmed I can share written descriptions here. In celebration of the newly released single, I want to dive into the archives and offer some insight into the creative process behind The New Abnormal.
The beginning
The band began the demo process in late 2016 with a total of 13 tracks. Only seven of those songs made the cut. The remaining six tracks were developed intermittently between 2016 and 2019 but were ultimately scrapped—and, as of now, remain unheard by the public.
Rick Rubin joins the picture
Rick Rubin received those 13 demos in early 2017. Impressed by the material, he gathered the band at his Shangri-La Studios in the summer of 2017 to begin on-and-off sessions for what would become The New Abnormal album. At that time, the band was aiming for a November 2018 release date.
The Original 2018 Tracklist
Before the delays and revisions, the planned track-list looked quite different.
- Bad Decisions
- Oretti (Unreleased)
- Selfless
- Brooklyn Bridge to Chorus
- Eternal Summer
- The Adults Are Talking
- Fralenzi (Unreleased)
- Ode to the Mets
- Not the Same Anymore
- Lonely Blvd (Unreleased)
- Morning (Unreleased)
- Why Are Sundays So Depressing
- Almost every song on this list originally had a completely different working title (besides the listed unreleased songs). I have listed the known songs by their final titles and not their original working titles.
- "Lonely Blvd" was a heavy contender for the final record. It was eventually swapped for "At The Door," which was the final song conceived for the album in 2019. "Lonely Blvd" would have easily been a top-3 track on the album.
- The November 2018 release was missed primarily due to Julian stalling the writing and recording process. This same pattern is why Reality Awaits missed its original 2023 release plans.
- Most of the vocals on the final album were recorded in mid-to-late 2019. The versions existing in 2017-early 2019 consisted mostly of guide vocals, featuring Julian humming or mumbling while searching for the right lyrics.
- The album cover was originally going to be “Untitled, 1984” by Jean-Michel Basquiat (There's a picture online of Julian checking out this painting).
I may follow up with another post after Reality Awaits drops to dive into its recording history and the planned 2023 tour, but we’ll see. No promises
Enjoy this information post, and goodbye for now 🌈
