I believe that we are infact in a simulation. Though not in the sense that initially comes to mind.
I think that parallel dimensions, spirit worlds, astral projection etc are humans accessing alternate layers of a massive simulation.
A simulation so big that there are entire layers or frequencies, maybe channels of the system we cannot normally perceive or interact meaningfully with.
Assume there are NHI around us, it makes more sense that an advanced civilization could travel within and perceive their position with more clarity.
They could have abilities that would seem fantastic or magical when in reality it is their technology and their ability to perceive and interact outside this layer.
The portals that have been reported, the vanishing and reappearing of things unexpectedly and unexplainably.
In most respects I feel that most things humanity views as alien, psychic, magical, supernatural, or spiritual could be linked to phenomena or fauna from other layers.
On to layers,.
It has been said that humans are batteries, kept in a reincarnation loop recycling endlessly, somehow generating a resource for something beyond our comprehension.
We interact daily with people that can leave us feeling drained, sad, stressed, or scared. Maybe those people are not people. They are some of the administrators.
Creatures still trapped in the simulation but under the direction
The matrix was a red herring. Humanity isn't generating electricity, it isn't generating anything humanity can measure.
The layers have different levels of security with corresponding levels of access or perception.
Humanity is near the bottom , ower in many ways than other animals.
We are livestock.
Humanity suffers daily. what if the suffering is their harvest. Or perhaps any extreme emotion would work but fear and sadness were just the easiest to generate en masse.
I feel like the simulation functions on a more literal level.
Holograms in the sense that we are pusedo corporeal NPC's in staged theatre type simulation, with limited space and a subjective reality that builds reality in response to trap and torture us.
Reality is more subjective than initially believed. CERN has strong evidence to suggest reality is only what we can perceive.
