Ranking Slasher Franchises: Part Threes

Ranking Slasher Franchises: Part Threes

  1. A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors- There really was no other choice for number one. Up there with sequels like Aliens and Terminator 2, which expand on the scope of the original without losing it's core appeal.

  2. Halloween 3: Season of The Witch- My favorite Halloween movie other than the original. The score/ overall atmosphere is immaculate and the plot is intriguing and batshit crazy in the best way.

  3. Friday The 13th Part 3- One of my favorite cheesy 80's slasher flicks and the movie that defined Jason as a horror/ pop cultural icon.

  4. Terrifier 3- A better shot and directed film than the first two. This one might be my favorite performance from David Howard Thornton.

  5. Prom Night 3: The Last Kiss- A surprisingly funny and entertaining movie for a second Prom Night sequel. I enjoy turning Mary Lou into a sexy Freddy Krueger-like character.

  6. Psycho 3- A well directed movie with a lot of good moments, but overall a lot more unfocused than the first two Psychos.

  7. Child's Play 3- Probably the most forgettable Chucky movie, but it's competently made and has moments of entertainment value.

  8. Scream 3- I don't really dislike this movie or anything, but it's still the weakest and most tired of the Scream sequels (I haven't seen 7).

  9. Hatchet 3- Probably the best out of all the Hatchet movies, for whatever that's worth. The change in directors makes a big difference.

  10. Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3- I like a lot of specific things about this movie (Ken Foree and Leatherface's design), but overall this is one of the most forgotten horror sequels ever made, and for good reason.

  11. Candyman 3: Day of The Dead- Basically just a lesser derivative of the second Candyman, which already wasn't a great movie. Some of the effects are laughably bad, but at least Tony Todd's still here.

  12. Sleepaway Camp 3: Unhappy Campers- I'll watch this movie anytime because it's Sleepaway Camp and I like the vibes of it, but this movie has almost nothing to it. It's unbelievably bland.

  13. Urban Legends: Bloody Mary- This piece of shit is only ranked this high 'cause of the one scene where spiders burst out of a girl's zit.

  14. Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out- Other than the killer being Billy Mosley with an exposed brain, this is one of the lamest, most weaksauce, rip offs of a horror movie I've ever seen.

  15. I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer- This movie fucking sucks. Why did ghost Ben Willis start killing a bunch of kids he doesn't even know? What the fuck?

  16. Slumber Party Massacre 3- May very well be the most forgettable slasher sequel ever made. This movie literally has no identity of it's own and no memorable, stand out sequences or kills or anything.

Ranking Slasher Franchises: Part Twos

  1. Child's Play 2- Honestly one of my favorite horror movies period, and one I watched religiously as a kid.

  2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2- An ingeniously perfect sequel in that it captures the same chaotic terror of the first while having a vibe and aesthetic of its own.

  3. Psycho 2- Like many fans, I personally prefer this subversive legacy sequel over the more iconic original.

  4. Halloween 2 (1981)- A haunting, atmospheric suspense flick which might play as a better crowd pleaser compared to the slowburn original.

  5. Terrifier 2- A slasher cult classic for the ages featuring a kickass final girl, awesome gore and Art as his usual delightful self.

  6. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge- A movie I've really come around to after repeat viewings. It's easily one of the scariest and most thematic Freddy movies compared to the later sequels.

  7. Scream 2- Although this is a pretty great slasher movie, I definitely feel there's a noticeable quality gap between this and the original. Mickey is my least favorite Ghostface.

  8. Friday The 13th Part 2- Another slasher sequel which people swear by that think is just alright. It's pretty slow for most of the runtime, but the third act is pretty great.

  9. Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2- Not really a slasher film at all, but an atmospheric and unique 80's possession flick that honestly surpasses the original.

  10. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer- A guilty pleasure of mine. The script is remarkably asinine, but there's plenty of slasher fun to be had here.

  11. Slumber Party Massacre 2- It has some pacing problems, but the rock a billy dream killer is probably the most underrated horror villain ever.

  12. Sleepaway Camp 2: Unhappy Campers- This movie is very flawed, but I just love Pamela Springsteen as Angela so much.

  13. Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2- One of the all time great so bad it's good films alongside The Room and Troll 2.

  14. Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh- Not a terrible movie at all, but I've watched it multiple times and don't remember a thing about it.

  15. Hatchet 2- Better than the original because of Daniel Harris and Tony Todd, but a lot of it is boring and cheap looking.

  16. Urban Legends: Final Cut- Manages to be even lamer and more unimpressive than the already underwhelming original.

Possible hot take: The gargoyles aren't as bad as everyone says they are

Their song is pretty bad, but overall Quasimodo needed someone to talk to/ bounce off of when alone in the bell tower and they're the sole positive influence in Quasi's life before Esmeralda showed up.

Also low-key, Turk in Tarzan and the Martin Short robot in Treasure Planet are way more annoying.

Ranking The Big Six Part One (56-47)

  1. Halloween: Resurrection- Honestly, this wasn't even close. Resurrection is the definitive example of an iconic franchise being corrupted by artless corporate pandering. Laurie Strode (and any connection to the previous films) is stupidly and unceremoniously killed off 20 minutes in, just for the sake of a dated, cringey reality tv show inspired plot that barely even feels like a Halloween movie. The worst part is it's too generic and paint by numbers to fall into the "so bad, it's good" category.

  2. Texas Chainsaw 3D- While not as bad as Resurrection direction wise, this movie is easily just as stupid and nonsensical. The time skip nonsense in the beginning where the main character inexplicably 25 years in the span of 40 is probably the worst continuity oversight in slasher sequel history. Even putting that aside, the whole premise of trying to make the cannibalistic Sawyer clan sympathetic victims and having the final girl team up with Leatherface at the finale is one of the most disastrous attempts at subverting audience expectations I've ever seen.

  3. Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers- Some might be surprised to see H5 this low, but I'll argue tooth and nail that it deserves it. This movie is such a cobbled together cavalcade of bad creative decisions and shoddy filmmaking. Killing off Rachael too early, the annoying side characters, the lackluster kill count, trying to humanize Michael, introducing the convoluted curse of thorn crap etc. I could forgive a lot of this movie's faults if it wasn't so goddamn boring.

  4. Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare- Like Halloween Resurrection, this is a movie that despite its silliness, is too damn boring and flat to be considered campy fun. It's honestly insulting how half-assed Freddy's Dead was, considering it was supposed to be the series finale. Even Robert Englund seems checked out, as his performance as Freddy leaves a lot to be desired imo.

  5. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation- A bafflingly awful and embarrassingly miscalculated horror film that I nevertheless have to give small credit to for being so zany and unintentionally hilarious. This is the least intimating and most pointless Leatherface, and who the hell thought a TCM movie needed an illuminati subplot? On the plus side, Matthew McConaughey is giving it his all and he's a blast to watch.

  6. Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday- It's a shame I have to rank this movie as high as it is just for its creativity and practical effects, because it truly is fucking awful. Everything about the demonic possession plot is so nonsensical and convoluted, when the whole appeal of the Friday series is its simplicity. To add insult to injury, the movie squanders any suspense or mystery the body swapping premise has by having the audience know exactly who Jason is possessing throughout most of the movie.

  7. Friday The 13th Part 8: Jason Takes Manhattan- Kane Hodder is at the top of his game playing Jason, as this movie might have my favorite physical portrayal of the character. It sucks such a great Jason is saddled with this tired entry in the series, with its morose pace and crappy kills that lull me to near sleep on every viewing.

  8. A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)- Suffice to say, I don't think this movie is AS bad as most Freddy fans make it out to be. Its competently made and has the right idea having a darker, more grounded approach. None of that matters however, since this is one of the most soulless and least imaginative remakes ever made. So much is lazily regurgitated from the original you really get the sense no one really wanted to make this.

  9. Halloween (2007)- Rob Zombie's Halloween remake is simultaneously extremely overrated and kind of overrated. It's too genuinely intense and scary to be written off as a total piece of shit, but it also ruins the subtly that made the original special in favor of a more generic, in your face gore fest that are a dime a dozen. Delving into Michael's childhood could have worked, but the dialogue and characters are so filthy and over the top it's very difficult to take seriously.

  10. Halloween 2 (2009)- Yeah, I slightly prefer the Rob Zombie's second Halloween film to his first. Instead of feeling like a bastardized retread of the original, it feels little more like RZ's unique, stand-alone vision for the Michael Myers character. The dialogue and characters are still annoying, but I honestly kind of dug all the surreal visuals and dream-like atmosphere they were going for.

Gaston is a great villain and all, but I genuinely revile him unlike other iconic Disney villains.

Gaston is just too close to real life alpha male douchebags for me him to enjoy him as a villain the way I enjoy more outlandish Disney antagonists like Ursula, Jafar or Hades.
