Jiangxi Forest, China, the day after the Bronze Saint’s departure

The chirping of the birds reverberated across the forest alongside the chatter of the monkeys and other animals that inhabited the land. A small, clear stream passed through where Career was walking, the crunching of the undergrowth beneath his feet covered up by the animal’s noises. Exhausted, he immediately threw himself to the ground, cupped his hands and quickly started to drink the stream’s water as well as washing his face. The water was cold, coming directly from the mountains nearby, but it barely kept him conscious.

Career groaned in pain and sat down properly, putting his feet in the water so it could wash the dirt off as well as keep him awake. He unbuttoned his hospital gown and checked the bandages that covered most of his body, pulling them tighter where necessary. He had escaped Rodorio’s hospital after just one day of being interned, and though six days had passed, the wounds he had suffered against Vic were still hurting like hell and threatened to reopen at the slightest bruise.

He leaned over the stream to look at his reflection and, trying to make it sting as little as possible, carefully tore off the large square bandage that had been placed on his forehead where the last of Vic’s meteors had got him. Though not as bad as when he first got it, he could still see a small dent where the wound was, the mere sight of it making his already banging headache worse.

“Aww shit…..” Career groaned again and poured more water onto his face to alleviate the pain and keep himself from falling unconscious, the threat of which had loomed over him since he had escaped. “What the hell am I even doing here?!” He shouted angrily as he let himself fall down on the ground, “Stupid Vic….if only he had surrendered when he should’ve, I wouldn’t be here raging like a GODDAMN ANIMAL!!!”

He stared up at the giant trees whose branches hid most of the setting sunlight from reaching the ground, casting long shadows across the forest floor. Then, he felt a freezing cold chill run down his spine as he heard a branch snap behind him. The extreme exhaustion had weakened his tiger senses and it was only at that moment he noticed that the forest had gone completely silent, sensing the presence of a predator much more dangerous than he could possibly comprehend.

“Running back to your place of origin was such a predictable move, though I’ll give you credit for not dying along the way” The voice was male and cold, but not devoid of emotion.

Career wanted to jump up and run away as fast as he could, yet he couldn’t move a single muscle as the dangerous aura of the man overwhelmed and terrified him in a way he hadn’t felt since his father was killed. Shaking like a leaf, he forced himself to slowly sit up and turn his head around, eyes constricting and sweat dripping down his face.

The man who stood before him was tall, well toned, had long, thick brown hair styled in large layered waves and curled strands and light blue eyes which showed cold amusement towards his prey. His face had soft, delicate and somewhat feminine features that deeply contrasted with the murderous intent in the air around him.

“Who the hell are you?” Career questioned as his muscles stiffened, somehow finally gaining the strength to run away.

The man, amused, smiled at him, “Heh, I’m surprised someone like you doesn’t know me, but I’m more than happy to tell you my name. I am Alarmed, the Lizard Silver Saint!" At his words, Career’s eyes, which had only focused on the man’s face, lowered to observe his body, protected by the Lizard Cloth.

The leg armour included smooth oval kneeguards overlapping the greaves, and full greaves that covered the legs and feet like armoured boots. The greaves had articulated ankle joints, decorative fins on the calves, and shoe-like foot protection with raised heels. The belt was a simple metal band around the waist with circular buckles and a flower-shaped ornament containing a blue gem at the center, and had a thin flexible strip connected to the breastplate, protecting the abdomen. The arm protections consisted of cylindrical bracers covering the hands, wrists, and forearms, with articulated joints, and each bracer featured a thin fin-like projection along the outer forearm. The shoulder guards were small, curved, claw-like plates designed mainly to defend against overhead attacks. Alongside the shoulder guards, the chestplate formed a compact central block that protected only the upper torso and part of the back. The breastplate was rounded and muscle-shaped, with a lowered central extension protecting the sternum and a partially open back.

Finally, the helmet was a diadem-style headpiece that surrounded most of the head while leaving the back and much of the skull exposed. It consisted of a thin metal band around the head, triangular ear guards extending upward and downward, red diamond decorations resembling eyes on the temples, and a large central diamond-shaped crest rising above the forehead with a green gem at its centre. The Cloth was of a silver colour, which contrasted nicely against the purple suit he wore underneath it all as well as the pristine white cape on his back.

“As Sanctuary’s assassin, I have been sent here under orders of the Pope to execute you for treason, Upbeat Career”

At those words, the adrenaline in Career’s body finally kicked in and he managed to leap up into the stream and ran away from Alarmed as fast as he could, speeding away in the forest at the speed of sound. He reached a safe distance and allowed himself to look back as he kept on running, but saw no one coming after him. As soon as he turned his head back around, he felt the cold, hard embrace of a hand grabbing his face and slamming his back hard into a large tree. Career painfully gasped for air as the impact shattered his already fragile back, made worse by splinters stabbing into him, all of which made him cough up blood.

“He’s so fast!” He thought to himself as he quickly threw a jab at his face, which Alarmed easily blocked.

Career threw another jab at his stomach but the Lizard Saint grabbed his hand and threw him sideways against another tree. Coughing up blood, Career quickly got up and aimed a roundhouse kick at his opponent, who grabbed his leg and threw him up in the air, making him crash against some branches. The tiger growled as he fell down upon the lizard, clasping his hands and aiming a double axe handle at his head. Alarmed sidestepped and delivered a powerful punch to Career’s cheek as he came close, making him fly against another tree.

He quickly got back on his feet and, moving at the speed of sound, tried to escape again, hoping to lose his enemy in between the trees. Again though, Alarmed reached him with ease and delivered a strong hand chop against the back of his neck, knocking the air out of him as he crashed into the ground.

Dusting his hands off, Alarmed chuckled to himself and looked down at his prey, “Did you seriously think that you could fight, let alone escape me? Whilst it's impressive that, given your condition, you could still hold your ground and reach the speed of sound, I’m still a Silver Saint, meaning I can move between the speeds of Mach 3 and Mach 5 without even trying!” He crouched down and grabbed Career’s hair, pulling the boy up to his face as he smirked, “Do you understand, Career? I can move five times faster than you! The only reason you got this far in the first place is because I wanted to have some fun before I killed you!”

“Dammit dammit dammit! This is bad! How the hell do I get out of this situation now?!” The situation seemed hopeless to Career as he couldn’t think of any way out of it no matter how hard he tried. He was tired, on the brink of death, and against an opponent he couldn’t beat no matter how much effort he put into the fight.

Alarmed smirked and let go of his grip on Career’s hair, and as if reading his thoughts spoke again, “Don’t fear, I always give my victims a one time offer. You can either die by my hands, or die honourably by your own hands by slitting your throat with those claws of yours”

Career’s eyes widened at those words as he stared at the ground. He felt bitter. Alarmed gave him a choice that would nonetheless result in his death. Even though he wanted to reject both options, even though he wanted to keep on living, even though he wanted to see his master’s face again, taking his own life sounded more enticing given the desperate situation he was in…..

Groaning, he staggered back on his feet and stared at his hands. He hated feeling defenceless, so healing his claws was the first thing he did after escaping, ignoring the rest of his body in the process, hence why he was so weakened. Alarmed’s smirk widened slightly at the sight of his prey's nails growing into inhuman claws.

He crossed his arms and watched him, “I see you’ve chosen the second option. Don’t be ashamed, it was the most reasonable choice after all. And don’t worry, I’ll be sure to tell your master you died in the glory of battle!”

Career moved his hands upwards a bit before letting out a feral growl and charged at his enemy, aiming his claws at Alarmed’s neck. “NO!” He thought to himself, “I REFUSE TO DIE TODAY!”

The Lizard Saint looked unbothered at the sudden attack, “Oh? You’re resisting? Then it seems like you want me to kill you instead,” he watched in slow motion as Career charged at him, ignoring the sudden feeling of unease starting to stir inside of him.

Career made no notice of his words and kept sending a flurry of claw attacks at Alarmed, even though he dodged every strike with ease. He was moving so fast that to Career it seemed like he was standing completely still, yet he didn’t give up. He was determined to beat the assassin no matter what!

“Alright, enough playing!” Alarmed spoke out as he stopped moving, finally giving Career the opportunity to stab him.

The Tigerboy went in for the kill, growling as he aimed for his opponent’s heart. But he never reached it. His right claws shattered as if they had hit a wall, yet there was nothing in front of Alarmed that defended him. He tried again with his left claws, this time aiming at his stomach, but the same thing happened. Career grit his teeth, still not giving up, and decided to hit him with a punching barrage. It was to no avail. His fists never reached Alarmed no matter how hard he tried, and his fingers and knuckles started to ache and bruise the more he pressed on the attack.

“Having trouble Career?” Alarmed laughed loudly into the air before looking back down at him, “No matter how hard you strike, you’ll never be able to hit me! Just as a human would fail to harm a god, so would an ant like you fail to harm something infinitely superior to it like me! Don’t you see?! Your efforts are utterly futile, Tigerboy!”

Career halted his attack at the mention of his old nickname, shocked to see someone other than Kai knew it, “How do you know…”

“Simple. Your master told me when I went to question her about you. Everyone at Sanctuary suspected you weren’t fully human, so I wasn’t too surprised to hear you were the son of a spirit,” Alarmed replied with a smirk as he enjoyed the expression of shock his prey had, “Speaking of your master, did you know she’s in hospital because of you? She fell sick and collapsed as soon as she discovered you’d escaped from Sanctuary! That poor girl, years of built up suffering finally culminating in the treason of her precious pupil. How cruel of you to make her suffer after everything she did for you, Tigerboy!”

“What? N-No, it c-can’t be….” Career’s face went as pale as a ghost. He tried to make himself believe that Alarmed was lying, but he could see it from his eyes that it was the truth. He’d let his pride and ego take over him without thinking of the consequences it would have on his dear master, whom he considered a mother. He wanted to rip his face off for being so selfish.

Despite his soft appearance, Alarmed was well known for being cruel to his victims. Gods forgive him, but he felt an incredible satisfaction at the sight of his prey's excruciating pain. He always made sure to make his victims suffer before dying, so as to atone for their treachery or other sins against Sanctuary. Still, he felt oddly uneasy about killing him, yet he shrugged it off and admired his work for a few more seconds before cracking his knuckles, “If you’re done, I believe it’s my turn!”

He sent a flurry of powerful, precise strikes against Career, each one carefully aimed to render him harmless. A fist to his gut, a dual spear strike to his shoulder, a hand chop against his neck. Career felt his bones crack at each hit, the pain becoming unbearable as his old wounds started to reopen one by one, giving his bandages and hospital gown a crimson colour. Alarmed ended his attack with a powerful punch against Career’s forehead which made him fly and crash through several trees and reopened his wound.

The injured boy desperately gasped for air as he slouched against the last tree he had crashed into, creating a large crack behind it which left it at risk of falling over him. Alarmed chuckled as he walked over to him, proud of his work, “I told you. You are nothing but an ant to me! I could kill you with a finger if I so wished!”

The tree then snapped and started to fall over them and using it to make his point, he raised an index finger against it, raised his Cosmos and blasted it to smithereens. Splinters rained down on the two boys, and Career could do nothing but stare at his opponent in awe and terror.

“He barely raised his Cosmos and yet he destroyed it with a single finger….Silver Saints are terrifying…” He whispered as his expression went dark and body went limp.

Alarmed’s smirking expression turned more somber as he stared down at Career’s body, “He finally died….seemed he couldn’t withstand such basic attacks due to the wounds he suffered against Pegasus….well, I suppose I have to find a way to bring his body back to Sanctuary!” He said as he turned to walk away from him.

“I’m…not…dead…..yet…..”

Eyes wide with surprise, Alarmed stopped in his tracks and turned his head around to see Career stagger back up on his feet. Though he was covered in blood and barely had enough strength to think, he still managed to stand up on his shaking legs. “I’m not done just yet!” He shouted as he stared into Alarmed’s eyes, “I need to live on so I can apologise to Kai!”

Alarmed stared back and was even more surprised to see that they still burned with courage and fervent determination. “Incredible…you should be dead and yet here you stand to fight again…” he turned his entire body around and couldn’t stop himself from admiring the boy, and he finally understood the feeling of unease that had pervaded his body: it was the sadness of having to kill a good and devoted fighter.

“Alas, I must bring my assignment to completion. I’ll make sure to award your bravery with a quick death, Career. Prepare yourself!” The ground beneath Alarmed shook as his Cosmos flared up, the silver energy covering his body. Career prepared himself for the worst, putting his arms up to defend himself, yet it wasn’t enough.

Alarmed started to manipulate the air around him, and as he did, he channeled his Cosmos into his right arm. The wind blew through his cape and hair, making them flow in the air. “Die in honour, Career!” He then extended it towards him, opened his hand and pointed two fingers at him and shouted,

“MAVROU TRYPA!!!”

A powerful gust of wind projected in the form of a tornado released from his hand towards Career, dragging him in and exerting an overwhelming pressure against his body.

“It’s like being inside a black hole!” He thought as his body began to shatter. His trousers were torn and his gown was completely shredded alongside his bandages. Blood sprayed in the air around him as his wounds were now completely exposed. It was too much pain to even process. “KAIIIIIIIII!!!!!” He screamed as he fell hard face first against the ground, going completely limp again. The ground beneath him couldn’t soak the entirety of his blood.

Alarmed stared at Career’s body for a moment before finally letting his guard down, his Cosmos dissipating. “He was in such a bad state that I didn’t even use my full power, or else I would’ve completely pulverised him,” he looked almost sad as he walked over to the boy, looking down at his bloodied body, “Forgive me Career. I should’ve honoured you by using my full power, yet Kai deserved to at least see your body one last time”

His father was sitting with his legs crossed on a rock overlooking a valley. It was peaceful up there, despite the wind blowing hard against them. Turning to him with a smile, he spoke softly, “Spirits take their power from the elements, Upbeat……I myself take it from the wind…..once you’ve learned the way of the tiger, I’ll teach you how to use this power…..”

Alarmed quickly leapt back as Career’s Cosmos flared up to an intensity he’d never reached before. It was so great that it overshadowed Alarmed’s previous display of power.

“IMPOSSIBLE! He should be dead by now, let alone be able to raise his Cosmos to such a level! Is the devotion to his master so powerful that he’s able to channel it into energy?!”

Career lifted himself up from the ground, expression dark. He shouldn’t have been able to move due to his broken bones. He should’ve died from the incessant blood loss he was facing. And yet there stood, his Cosmos overflowing from his body and threatening to overwhelm Alarmed like a typhoon. The Silver Saint was too shocked to even move out of his way. He had never been so afraid of someone in all his life, especially of one of his victims.

Career pulled his arm back and channeled his Cosmos into it, just like his opponent had done against him. “This….is for…..my master….KAIIIII!” The image of a strong, beautiful tiger appeared behind him as he let out a vicious roar, and Alarmed thought that what he had in front of him was just like an enraged god ready to punish an ant for its sins. The furious tiger punched the air in front of him and released a giant gust of wind mixed with his white Cosmos.

Alarmed was too stunned by the sudden display of power to defend himself. It ripped his pristine white cape to shreds, tore through some of the purple suit underneath his cloth, threw his helmet off far behind him and cut his cheeks. It wasn’t much, but considering that Career wasn’t even a Bronze Saint, him managing to hurt a Silver Saint would’ve been considered a miracle.

“Such rage…..such devotion…..such raw power! He could definitely be useful to us! But my job is to execute him….I can’t go against the Pope’s orders!” Alarme thought to himself as he looked at Career, who was starting to stumble around. The release of such incredible power took a heavy toll on his broken body, and the rivers of blood that flooded out of him brought him on the brink of death.

Alarmed shut his eyes tightly and clicked his tongue, “Forgive me Career….you’ll sleep for a long time!”

The Tigerboy’s eyes widened as he felt his chest start to burn. He looked down and saw that Alarmed had stabbed him with a finger right in the middle of it. He saw his entire life flash before his eyes: his parents, their deaths, Kai taking him in, his training, Vic, Alarmed and all the good and bad times he had spent in his life. He cried as he fell on his back once Alarmed had pulled his finger out. And then everything went black.

Author’s notes: this is the 8th and final chapter of the first arc of the series, which in such an original way named “The Beginning”, marked with 8 chapters of the normal storyline plus 2 special chapters that give backstories. This means that I will be taking a break for a week, maybe two, before starting on the next arcs: “Spectre Island Arc” and “Death Queen Island Arc”.

I want to thank you all for your incredible support towards my series, I realise I’m not the greatest author out there but I have tried my best to create a good story for you all and I will continue to do so for the rest of it! Also, I have decided to move the chapter release from Friday to Sunday as a test to see if it's better for me or not. I’m also gonna make a post later tonight (cause it's 21:48 as I write this) with the links to all the chapters plus extra info about Saint Seiya and the fic.

Lastly, I wanted to clarify on the name “Mavrou Trypa”, which means “Black Hole” in Greek (hence the way the technique works). However, the correct spelling is “Mavri Trypa”, but Kurumada literally translated it to that version so ofc I’m sticking with that.
Also, for every new technique I’m gonna put it alone like I did here like big and its own line kinda thing so I’m gonna change it for the “Unicorn Gallop” seen in chapter 4 too not that anyone remembers but yk I still make it look good.

Lizard Cloth

Sanctuary, Greece, 10 years ago

“Father, look at this drawing I made at school today!” Waverider was excitedly holding a piece of paper right up in his father’s face.

“Hey hey, easy now kid! I can’t see it if it's so close!” The man chuckled as he took the paper from his son’s hands and observed it. It was a very simple drawing of the two of them together, but it was clear the boy had put a lot of effort into it.

“Hey you’ve improved!” The man chuckled again as he looked back at his son, “I like it! I’ll pin it to the wall next to my bed!”

As he went to his bedroom, the man thought about his recent life with Waverider. He had adopted the 10 year old boy two years ago after finding him crouched against a wall with multiple blue ignis fatuus hovering around him: a sign of death. It was tough at the start since the boy wasn’t very trusting of the man, nor did the man have much time to bring the kid up due to him training most of the day to become a Silver Saint as well as being an inexperienced 20 year old. Still, their bond slowly grew as the days went on, and the man was happy that Waverider saw him as a real father now.

He pinned the new drawing next to a few older ones on the wall above his desk. Since they were in front of his bed, every morning he’d wake up and see them first, making him smile. The man felt his son tugging at his shirt and looked down, knowing exactly what he was going to say upon seeing the bright expression on his face.

“Father! Tell me how training went today! Are you a Saint yet?” The boy excitedly asked.

The man ruffled his hair and sat down on the edge of his bed, Waverider following close. “Training went as good as always kid, but I’m no Saint yet. Not until tomorrow at least”

Waverider’s eyes widened in excitement at his father’s words, “Tomorrow?! You’re gonna fight for the Silver Cloth tomorrow?!”

The man laughed, grabbing Waverider and setting him on his lap, and nodded, “Yup, tomorrow’s the big day”

Waverider looked up at his father with wonder and admiration. Wuujy had been a Bronze Saint for five years now, and had been working hard on getting promoted to Silver, something highly unusual and near impossible. It was hard enough to become a Saint, let alone be promoted to a higher rank. Still, he had put his all into this and his efforts were finally rewarded when the Pope granted him the chance to fight for a Silver Cloth.

“Do you think you could lose against your enemy tomorrow?” Waverider asked, worried that his father may not succeed.

“Lose? Pffffft! I could never lose to her!” The man confidently boasted.

Stunned, the young boy could only mutter “You are…..amazing….”

His father chuckled and ruffled his hair again, “Yeah, well, I like to think I am. Now come on, off to bed it is for you!”

He picked his son up, walked to his bedroom and tucked him under the covers. Waverider held on to his plushies and smiled, “Father, can I come and see you fight tomorrow?” He begged his father.

“You know you can call me by my name instead of always saying father right? But to answer your question, not a chance. You have school, kid. You’re not getting out of it that easily,” the man leaned down and kissed his forehead, “I’ll let you ride on my new Pandora Box tomorrow when I pick you up ok? Now get to sleep kiddo,” he smiled and turned to leave.

“Father, can I become a Saint?” Waverider’s question stopped his father in his tracks.

“Well uh….you’re a little old for that…..” he turned his head a little to look at his son with the corner of his eyes, “But I have no doubt that you’d become a great Saint if you wanted to be one”

Waverider looked into his father’s eye and saw the pure, genuine conviction it expressed, and it filled him with immeasurable joy and pride.

“He’ll definitely win the Silver Cloth!” “He’s an amazing Saint!” “He’s an incredible person!” “He’s so proud!” “He’s so honourable!” “I wish I had a father as wonderful as him!” “He’s such a lucky kid to be his son!”

Waverider had heard those words and more so many times now, and it only added to the pride he felt towards the man who had taken him in at his lowest moment. He ran down the street, a gleeful smile on his face. He had finished his school project quicker than anyone else and had pleaded with his teacher to let him go watch the fight, to which they had ultimately agreed to.

The school project consisted in writing about their respective dads as Father’s Day was coming up soon. As Waverider neared the arena, he reflected on what he had written, holding the sheet of paper in his hand.

“My father is the most amazing father of all. Even though I’m not his real son, he’s always patient, kind and loving with me. He’s a wonderful father and a wonderful person”

As he arrived at the arena, he took no notice of the screams, which sounded more horrified than excited.

“My father is also an amazing Saint! He trained so hard to become a Bronze Saint, and now will become a Silver Saint because of how strong and admirable he is!”

As he entered the arena, he took no notice of the horrified expressions on the spectators.

“How spectacular! How magnificent ! How extraordinary! How wonderful! How honourable! This is what my father is and I deeply admire and respect him for it!”

His eyes widened in shock and horror as they set their gaze on the terrible spectacle before him. His hands loosened, letting go of the piece of paper which flew away from him and down into the arena.

Sat unconscious against a broken, bloodied wall was Kai, his father’s training partner and adversary. Her whole body was covered in blood, several soldiers tending to a deep wound on her head.

The Leo Saint, Kenji, had his arms crossed and one foot on top of his father’s head, keeping him down on the ground. His expression was dark and full of rage.

His father was lying in a pool of blood, twitching, seeming hardly alive.

“f-f-f…….f-fa…..f-fath….fathe….”

Waverider’s throat felt dry as he stuttered, barely able to formulate a word due to the shock coursing through his veins. Then, something snapped inside of him, and all he could feel was rage and desperation as he called out for his father once again.

“WUUJY!!!”

Author’s notes: told you I’d get this done soon bleh. Very short but I think I did well.

Honestly I don’t think there’s much else to say about this chapter other than it giving some sort of a backstory to these characters.

Btw if you were wondering, ignis fatuus are those little blue/green flames you find in cemeteries and swamps sometimes, but all will be revealed in due time. Also, for the little school project, I got the idea from FMA:B when Selim was reading out about his dad.
