Advice on how to go about helping a student who basically didn't understand or do any of their homework all year long.... Challenge ___ how much is reasonable for prep and to expect the student to work on?

Challenge: Help kid understand material // high school math class

Somehow pass class?

They don't have a textbook -- I used to have a version of one __ bought one... going to take a bit to arrive.
I was debating printing versions from online, but I think cost wise that doesn't make sense printing out even 100 pages... just better to buy a copy or two, even if delayed

Am looking up worksheets and example intros, might print out 1 chapter or just share pdfs and write some out on paper?

I think the family wants me to go over material on going... but it's pretty clear the same mistakes keep happening in her going through the material and it's not so much that the new concepts are difficult, but the mechanics of solving the problem are holding her back.

Sent an overview- while trying to be as kind as possible to the guardians... it's the last half of the last quarter of the year.. I don't know how much time I'm going to have to work with the student and how to jam pack and help her do better in such a short time frame.

Starting a tutoring side gig--- is $30/hr reasonable - or could I charge a bit more?

Hi All,

I've helped classmates in high school and during college was a tutor a few times, mostly just helping high school kids get their homework done, but not really actively teaching or going over concepts.

I substitute teach at a school - where I help kids with math if they need help -- Alg up to Calculus-- one of the guardians wants me to help her sister after school -- and I'm wondering if $30/hr is too low.

I think the first few sessions will be gauging what her skill level or knowledge is.
I need to find a copy of a relevant textbook for good reference...

I think there might be a lot of understanding gaps
___ I'm not sure if she needs a relesson - of each prior lesson -- or just more guided practice.

have a STEM degree-- remember some more statistics and calc - more than geometry
do remember algebra problems

What were your experiences starting a tutoring side gig?

I think the experience would be fun and helpful for me to get organized on some things
... but also in my mind -- I don't want the kid to need a lot of tutoring - -- so hopefully the goal is they get better and can self teach through researching youtube videos that lecture train content... that's kind of how I end things

I like PatrickJMT's videos a lot
And basically I do something similar to what he does...

Thanks!
