First time poster - looking for some advice

I do need a haircut (it’s been 5 weeks) but I’m surprised at how outgrown / uncontrolled my hair is at the moment - wondering if the last cut got the style wrong

Can anyone please share any tips / advice on what I need to do in terms of cut + styling to get it closer to the two example haircuts?

For reference I showed the first example picture to my barber before my last haircut, and also open to the second style. Disclaimer: I realise my hair is very straight but hoping I can get close to the example pics
