Currently playing Valhalla (first AC game I've played for like 15 years). Why does it feel like facial animations and writing are both worse than the last time I played an AC game?

I'm about 30 hours into AC: Valhalla. At first I was enjoying it, but for the past 10 hours or so I feel super detached from the main story and the way the characters are animated when they speak. It feels so fake and unnatural.
From my memory (could be nostalgia) the older stuff that I played felt much much higher quality when it came to writing and facial animations no? I remember being completely amazed by AC3 and Black Flag's stories.
maybe it's because Valhalla is simply too big to have great writing, but man is it boring. The plot never progresses.
Weird.
