Been playing around with Steam Input

Was lucky enough to get the new Steam Controller on the first go. One of the reasons I was excited was specifically for games like Gray Zone Warfare that do not support controllers, but through Steam Input you can play with one. I’ve been messing around with SI in preparation for couch gaming, whether with a Steam Machine when they eventually drop, or making my own version with some beefier hardware.

Now, I’d never want to try this in PVP, but for PVE it feels quite nice. Only parts I’ve still been tweaking is the sensitivities for aiming with the thumb stick and then gyro aim on full pull of LT. I’ve been having a lot less NDs since left mouse click requires the full right trigger pull to activate. In menus, you can mouse around with the thumb stick with ease using left trigger for right clicks and left trigger for left clicks. Once I got used to it, it started to feel natural and I was able to do inventory management almost as fast as I can on M&K.

As for the face buttons, I found it pretty intuitive to have multiple inputs based off of single press, double press, and long press. I haven’t played much with button chords which is the next step but I found this setup to play pretty well on PVE, mostly because I love gyro aiming in shooters.

If you have a DualSense controller, you can do something very similar. For you Steam Controller havers, let me know if this works for you! I know this won’t be all that interesting for the majority of GZW players, but for the .008% using Steam Controllers I hope this is a nice jumping off point for your own setup.

It’s finally here!

The process of getting a steam controller ordered was actually quite arduous. As soon as I saw the release date, I added a reminder to my calendar. The only issue was that as the day came for the orders to go live, I ended up having to do some work stuff around the time the release window was happening.

During our flight brief, I asked my helicopter pilots if we could take a tactical pause of about 7 minutes from 9:58 to 10:05 so that I could do something, but I would require cell service. They obliged the request, and during a training flight near the central California coastal mountains, I found a single bar of service and was able to submit my order near the 7,000ft peak in sight of a cell tower in the valley below.

Well, or so I thought. Every time I hit next, I was hit with an error dialogue box. I kept mashing that button until it changed to a confirmation, and we continued on with our training.

Controllers just arrived, and it is seriously great. I’ve already been well versed on setting up the OG steam controller so this one is a breeze. The inputs are much better, and it feels premium despite what reviewers are saying about the plastics.

And yes, I bought two. I regret not having purchased extras of the OG back when they first came out, and then when they were liquidating them for cheap. One for the desktop, and another for travel. No, I am not scalping the second one. Scalpers deserve a special ring of hell for what they do.
