Calorie burn estimation - flawed or am I messing up?
Hi there!
I just purchased a Polar Loop and have been using it for bouldering and sleep for the past weeks. Some days, I also wear it just to check heart rate in stressful situations.
The sleep tracking is great, and I also generally feel its comfortable to wear, both when working out, when climbing, and when sleeping.
Now, I am fully aware that the calorie burn rate is easily “confused” for high-burst exercise like bouldering, but I’m still confused by the estimates.
Effectively, the watch seems to believe that I burn almost 1000 kcal just from 1h of bouldering, which is probably 20-30 seconds on the wall, and then 3-5 min rest, where my pulse remains relatively high.
Furthermore, the watch seems to estimate a high calorie burn, even when I’m stationary. I wore it Wednesday when I was working from home, and it estimated almost 600 calories burnt, even though I was effectively stationary for the entire day.
I do have a suspicion that it’s because of my relatively high resting pulse of around 80bpm (I’ve struggled with cardio health and am bringing this down, but it’s still high), which is wrongly estimated by the watch as exercise.
What can I do to make this more accurate? I’m halfway considering disabling calorie tracking in Apple Fitness just because it’s so inaccurate that I’d probably rather not have it. I’ve tried updating firmware, with no changes.
