**DISCLOSURE** This is unsponsored, but I did receive this sample from Unihertz for review **DISCLOSURE**
There's no money exchanging here, no posting requirements, no talking points, nothing. I can say what I want about this device (Spoiler tho, it's fucken sweet)
I'm tired af and I have the flu, so just doing a few bullet points on my thoughts really, but I wanted to share mainly cuz I wasn't expecting it to be as badass and I can't dive into a video review for a week or two. It's rare I'm excited to post shit, so they did a good one with this device.
Keyboard
- WAY better than I thought it'd be. Feels equal to, if not better than Blackberries etc.
- There's no "looseness" to the keys passively. I love my sidephone, but those keys felt like they could break after one drop. these keys are the real ass deal
- Typing is NOT faster (yet) than a full touchscreen, but I can see myself getting there with muscle memory. Seems my Blackberry days are far enough behind me that I'm slow AF, but it's still nice.
- I hear some people say the backlight is inconsistent? My review unit is immaculate, no backlight issues at all
- It's a phucken touch pad! Love this. It's a BIT wonky to use, but it might be user error and unfamiliarity.
- The KB was feels thought out completely, down to the physical android buttons (home, back, recent, etc)
Camera
- Better than I thought
- Has an actual telephoto it seems, not some lame ass 2x crop on the main sensor. Automatically this is a W.
- As someone who started a YouTube channel on an iPhone camera, I could literally use this currently for footage and not blink an eye or worry it'd look bad. Most people might not catch the footage in my videos next to my pro cameras.
Colour and Hand Feel
- I didn't get to choose my colour, but I woulda gone black. Orange looks dope still
- Orange frame and orange keys are a different shade. It's fine but I would hoped for a closer colour match. Very difficult to do with different materials.
- The mappable side button is excellent. I didn't even know this would be here, I dig it. Mapped to music, audiobook, and eReader. (Tap, hold, double tap)
- Fingerprint scanner on the power button is dope, works 9.5/10 times for my fat greasy fingers.
- Has an IR blaster, but I haven't used this yet. Anyone got an app recommendation to use this?
- Straight up premium - no part of my unit feels cheap or like it's not going to fair well.
- Pre installed screen protectors are barely noticeable. I implore you not to remove them, they're excellent.
Display and Speaker
- Actually incredible. Probably the best OLED display on a small phone that I've used.
- Display is better tuned/calibrated than my Light Phone 3 (also OLED).
- 120hz is gold
- Single speaker is fine, but feels like the weakest thing about this device. It's better than a lot of phones, but I woulda hoped for a dual speaker somehow. Top firing and it sounds crunchy at high volumes, not enough low ends/bass for my liking.
Battery
- Surprisingly good? Could be because I don't social media too much
- I can't really doomscroll on a square display, but I hear there's a mini mode or something to fit a rectangle? I don't know
- No wireless charging. Not a big one for me really, but woulda been nice.
Android 16
- BRILLIANT android experience. There's solid software here on android 16
- I figured the keyboard would be ass out of box, but there's literally nothing to do, straight up works
- Android AUTO
- The automatic options for typing corrections or otherwise voice dictation is rad. again, they thought of all this stuff, Kudos Unihertz.
- NFC but can't do Google Wallet for some reason? Says it doesn't meet security standards, hoping this can be updated. This is a big one for me. I hate fat ass wallets.
