I want to share a recent experience so others don’t end up in the same situation I’m in right now.
I booked a camper van through MyCamper for a trip to Switzerland. This wasn’t a random booking — I had been saving for months and planned it as a surprise trip for my fiancée.
Before booking, I did what any careful person would do: I contacted their support via chat and explicitly asked if a Ukrainian driving license would be accepted. They told me yes.
Based on that confirmation, I went ahead and booked the camper and paid €550.
Then things went sideways.
A few days later, the owner refused to hand over the vehicle, saying their insurance does not cover drivers with a Ukrainian license. So basically:
- The platform said it’s fine
- The owner said it’s not
- And I’m stuck in the middle
I contacted MyCamper support again, expecting them to fix their mistake.
Instead, they told me:
- The owner refuses a full refund
- So they can’t refund me either
Which honestly makes no sense. I didn’t book directly with the owner — I booked through their platform, based on their information.
After digging a bit more, I even found out that Ukraine isn’t part of the EEA, which contradicts what their support told me in the first place. So this wasn’t just a misunderstanding — it was incorrect information that directly led me to book.
End result:
- €550 gone
- Trip ruined
- No accountability from the platform
I’ve now escalated this through my bank (chargeback) and consumer authorities, but that takes time.
Lessons / warnings:
- Don’t rely on platform chat support alone — get everything in official written terms
- Double-check legal/insurance requirements yourself
- Platforms may shift responsibility to owners even when they give you wrong info
If anyone had a similar experience with MyCamper (or other rental platforms), I’d be really interested to hear how it turned out.
Hopefully this helps someone avoid the same situation.
