King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals vs University of Sydney for High Finance/Consulting Career

Hello,

I am a Pakistani iqama holder (soon to be a PR holder) in Saudi Arabia. I am deciding between King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals or the University of Sydney. I want to study finance/commerce and start my career in high finance or consulting.

My long-term goal is also to improve global mobility by eventually changing my passport so I have better access to international opportunities. At the same time, I ultimately plan to return and settle in Saudi Arabia.

For costs:

University of Sydney would be around 670k SAR total for the 3-year degree (tuition + living).

For King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, it would be around 150–200k SAR total for the 4-year degree.

If I go to the University of Sydney, I am allowed to work part-time during my studies and I can save around 50k SAR over the 3-year degree, which slightly reduces the overall cost, but it is still significantly more expensive overall compared to KFUPM.

Pros for University of Sydney: stronger global ranking (~top 30 for finance), strong international recognition, 3-year degree (one year faster), and better global mobility outcomes. If I ignore personal circumstances, it is clearly the stronger academic and international option.

Pros for King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals: much lower total cost, strong reputation within Saudi Arabia and the GCC, and strong placement into local/regional finance, consulting, and corporate roles.

The main issue is that I did not apply to King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals this year, so I would need to take a gap year. Both universities would start in 2027 (University of Sydney in February, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals mid-2027).

My question is: given my situation (Saudi PR path, goal of high finance/consulting, desire for better passport mobility, and long-term plan to eventually return to Saudi Arabia), which option makes more sense overall? I understand University of Sydney is better academically and globally, but I want advice based on real-world outcomes in my specific situation.

Also would appreciate insights on King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals for non-Saudis/PR holders and how internship and consulting opportunities compare.

Thank you.
