From a Total Loss to a New Beginning with a Kona EV Ultimate ⚡️

Last week was honestly a rollercoaster with my car situation. My 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Preferred ended up being a total loss after my accident, and it was super stressful dealing with insurance, finances, paperwork, and just the emotional side of losing a car I had literally just bought.

But… somehow, everything finally worked out.

I ended up getting another 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric, but this time the Ultimate trim with way more features, and honestly I already love it so much. It still feels surreal after everything that happened in such a short amount of time.

Right now I’m mostly just grateful that I was able to get back on my feet, find another vehicle, and move forward from all of this. Definitely hoping for calmer weeks ahead 😂

Hi everyone,

This is kind of an update, some of you may have seen my post last weekend right after the accident.

I’m honestly at a loss right now and could really use some advice.

I bought a 2024 Hyundai Kona (EV Preferred) about 2 weeks ago, and last Saturday I got rear-ended. The impact was strong enough that my trunk is pushed in and even my driver seat got damaged from the force. The car was declared a total loss, with around $22,000 CAD in repairs.

This is my first accident ever (I’m 26), and I’m honestly overwhelmed. Everything happened so fast, I got the news Friday night, and now it’s Saturday and I feel like I’m just trying to figure everything out in panic mode.

Insurance-wise, I don’t have replacement/new value coverage, so they’re offering me the market value of the car. The issue is, the comparables they used seem too low, so I did my own research and sent them better ones. I’m waiting to see if they adjust the amount.

The problem is: I still have a loan on the car, and I’m pretty sure the insurance won’t fully cover it. So I’ll probably have to pay the difference out of pocket to close the loan.

At the same time, I need a car for my job, so I don’t really have the option to wait long.
I did find another vehicle and placed a reservation on it, but now I’m stuck not knowing what to do financially.

My main concern is this:
Can I take out a second car loan while my current loan is still open and waiting to be paid by insurance?

Or will banks automatically refuse because I already have an active loan?

Do I need to wait until the first loan is fully closed before financing another car?

On top of that, I also bought an extended warranty (around $3,800 CAD) that should be refundable within 45 days, but I’m currently having to push the dealership to honor that too.

At this point, I feel like I’m fighting on all fronts (insurance, dealership, financing), and I’m honestly exhausted.

If anyone has been through something similar or works in insurance/financing, I would really appreciate your advice.

Thanks in advance 🙏

I’m honestly just looking for opinions here… do you think my car is totaled?

I got rear-ended today and this is the damage (2024 Hyundai Kona EV). The whole rear bumper is basically gone and the structure underneath looks hit too. It’s hard to fully see in the photos, but the trunk is pushed in as well. Even my driver seat back got bent from the impact when I was thrown forward/back.

I’ve only had this car for 2 weeks… literally my favorite car I’ve ever owned, and this happens.

I’m dealing with neck and shoulder pain (pretty sure it’s whiplash) and some memory issues, so I’m going to see a doctor tomorrow. So yeah… not exactly the best week.

Insurance-wise I’m well covered, so financially I’ll be okay. But emotionally? I’m just really upset. If it’s totaled, I lose the car I just fell in love with. If it’s repaired, then I’m stuck with a brand new car that’s already been in an accident.

I feel stuck either way and honestly just angry and disappointed.

Based on the damage, do you think insurance will total it or try to repair it?
