Buying Used Rivian R1S

Reddit Rivian community...I am running myself in circles and am looking for some honest help. Here is what is going on in my head:

  • I really want an R1S
  • I've been looking at new 2025 & 2026
  • I've been looking at used 2023-2025
  • I've test driven R1S Dual Standard and loved it
  • I've test driven the following:
    • EV6 (GT) - meh
      • Hate the Kia software interface
    • Mach-E (Premium) - liked (want to test a GT)
      • Don't love the vertical screen
    • Blazer SS EV - liked (not as fast as I thought)
      • Don't love the Google Auto interface or anything Android
    • Optiq - very luxurious but lots of hard buttons.
  • No matter how I run the numbers a $1000 car payment (new R1S) is rough and hard to swallow
  • Used R1S's 2025 also come with a rich car payment
  • Used R1S 2024-2023 much more affordable and doable financially
  • I do not want to lease (this IMO does not make financial sense)
  • I do have a reserved R2 (May 2025 reservation)
  • I'm struggling with the wait for R2 (possibly 2028)
  • I commute 100 miles per day.

What I need help with:

  • I have found a used 2023 R1S Quad Motor/mileage 31K for $57K
    • An accident was reported on the CarFax with no details of the damage
    • From what I understand, in CA. anything under $1K does not have to be reported.
    • It drove really nice and I didn't feel or hear anything weird.
    • Concerned about the accident, but made an offer of $53500.
    • It was also a rental vehicle at one point
  • Many 2023-2024s are very affordable for me financially
  • What will I not get software and feature wise in any of these vehicles now and in the future?
  • Not overly concerned about full autonomous since I do like to drive.
  • Highway autonomy is great for me
  • Do I really need a quad motor in CA? Is Dual or Dual Standard sufficient?
  • I do have a 2018 Dodge Durango r/T with 74K miles to trade-in ($21000)
  • Do I just be patient and wait for the R2 I have reserved? It's such a beauty of a car and affordable, but my Durango continues to lose value as I wait.

Any help that this community can provide is greatly appreciated. So many here are more knowledgeable then I and I feel give awesome advice. Please ask any questions to help provide advice. Thanks in advance.
