I tracked 500+ 'underground' gigs on Reddit, X, and Craigslist. Here are the exact 'Gold Hours' to apply (and why Upwork is a trap).

Honestly, I’ve been getting burnt out on Upwork lately, so I spent the last month digging into 'underground' gigs on Reddit, X, and Craigslist instead. After tracking about 500+ posts, I noticed a weird pattern with the 'Gold Hours' for each:

  • Craigslist: You have to hit it between 8am–10am EST. High-budget clients post first thing before their day gets crazy. If you wait until lunch, you’re already buried under 30 other emails.
  • X (Twitter): Tuesdays and Thursdays are huge for some reason. Founders tend to 'tweet-hire' mid-week, but these move fast. If the post is older than 3 hours, your odds of a reply basically drop to zero.
  • Reddit: Sunday nights and Monday mornings. People spend the weekend realizing they’re overwhelmed and post right as the week starts.

Quick tip for Reddit: Stop sorting by 'Top.' Always sort by 'New.' By the time a post hits the front page of a sub, it’s already got 100+ comments and you've missed the boat.
