CB500X – Beginner rider deciding between older models vs 2019+

Hey everyone,

I’m a beginner rider currently looking to buy my first bike, and the CB500X has really caught my attention.

Most of my riding will be in the city, but I also plan to take occasional longer rides and weekend trips. From what I’ve read, the 2019+ CB500X got a pretty significant update compared to the earlier models (especially suspension, 19” front wheel, slipper clutch, etc.).

My question is:

As a beginner rider, should I specifically aim for the 2019+ models because of these upgrades, or would older versions (2013–2018) still be perfectly fine for my needs?

I’m also planning to probably keep this bike for around 2 years as a first bike and then upgrade to something like a CB650R or a similar middleweight naked bike once I gain more experience.

So I’m wondering if it makes sense to invest a bit more into the newer CB500X now, or if the older models are already more than enough for learning, city riding, and occasional touring.

Would really appreciate any advice or personal experience from people who’ve ridden both versions.

Thanks!

Hey,

I just finished motorcycle school and I’m looking for my first bike. I’m deciding between:

  • Honda CB500X (2019+)
  • Kawasaki Z400
  • Yamaha MT-03

My riding would be:

  • mostly city
  • occasional ~100 km rides
  • and sometimes maybe longer trips (200-300 km)

I’m about 180 cm tall and my budget is 4000–6000 €.

What would you choose in my situation?

Also, is the CB500X too heavy/big for a beginner, or is it still a good choice?

Thanks!
