Are build-a-box subscriptions better than fixed subscriptions on Shopify?

I’ve been seeing more Shopify brands moving from fixed subscription boxes to “build your own box” subscriptions where customers can choose products themselves each month.

Honestly, it feels like a better customer experience because people get more flexibility instead of receiving random products they may not want.

But I’m curious from the merchant side:

  • Does it improve retention/churn?
  • Does customization increase AOV?
  • Is inventory management harder?
  • Do customers actually keep using it long term?

Seems especially popular in snacks, skincare, coffee, supplements, and gifting.

Also curious, which Shopify apps are people using for this? Most bundle/subscription apps I’ve seen feel either too basic or too complicated.

Would love to hear real experiences from stores running build-a-box subscriptions.

Do wishlist features actually help Shopify stores?

I never paid much attention to wishlist features before because I assumed most customers either buy or leave.

But after looking at store behavior more closely, I realized a lot of visitors are interested in products, they’re just not ready to purchase immediately.

Recently tested a wishlist club on a Shopify store and it was interesting seeing people come back later instead of disappearing completely.

It also seemed to help with:

  • returning visitors
  • back in stock interest
  • repeat purchases
  • products people keep checking multiple times

Curious if other merchants here are seeing the same thing or if wishlists are still underrated for Shopify stores?

I’ve been seeing more Shopify stores let customers build their own bundles/boxes instead of buying fixed packs.

Things like:

  • snack boxes
  • skincare bundles
  • coffee packs
  • gift boxes

As a shopper, it honestly feels better because you pick what you actually want.

But I’m curious from the merchant side, does this actually increase sales or AOV? Or does it just make inventory and setup more complicated?

Would love to hear from anyone who has tried it.

Currently looking for the best Shopify subscription app for my store, but there are so many options out there that it’s hard to tell which one actually performs well long term.

Would love to know which subscription app you’re using and why you chose it. Has it genuinely helped with retention and conversions, or is it mostly just another “subscribe & save” setup?

Open to all recommendations, even custom-built solutions if that’s worked better for you.
