Information for family moving to Fukuoka
Hi everyone! I’m currently living in Tokyo and planning a move to Fukuoka with my husband and our daughter (she’s currently 3 years old and will be starting elementary school in a few years).
I’m bilingual (English/Japanese, business level) and planning to continue working after the move, ideally in a role with a good work-life balance. My husband has basic Japanese.
We’re looking for a family-friendly area with:
Good public elementary schools
Easy commute
A lifestyle that works without a car at first (train/bus + electric bicycle)
More living space than central Tokyo
Safe, calm environment for raising a child
So far, we’ve been researching areas like Nishijin, Fujisaki, Muromi, and Meinohama.
I’ve read a few posts here in the Fukuoka thread, but I haven’t seen much specifically about families with young kids, so I wanted to ask directly.
I’ve done quite a bit of research, but I’m still having trouble understanding what daily life is actually like. I know visiting a place and living there are very different, so we’re planning a trip to Fukuoka before making a final decision.
For those who live (or have lived) in Fukuoka:
What are the real pros and cons of living there, especially with a young family?
How realistic is it to live comfortably without a car in these areas?
Are there any challenges that aren’t obvious when just researching online?
If you were in our situation, which area would you personally choose and why?
Lifestyle-wise, we’re not super fancy, but I guess I’m what people call a “gyaru” lol—pretty simple overall but I do enjoy getting my nails and lashes done. We like family outings like aquariums, zoos, and parks, and as a couple we enjoy movies, amusement parks, concerts, and things like ice skating. I love cooking, but we also enjoy eating out and trying new foods. So having things to do nearby is definitely a plus.
Any honest insights or experiences would really help—thank you so much!
