Game Over

A Boston career criminal who turned a handgun into a fully-automatic machine gun and shot eight people during the city's Caribbean Carnival was sentenced this week to life in prison.

Gerald Vick Jr., 33, of Dorchester, opened fire across Talbot Avenue in the pre-dawn hours of August 26, 2023, as the J'Ouvert parade was passing nearby. Eight people went down, including an 11-year-old child. None died. Twenty shell casings were recovered from the scene — five matched directly to Vick's pistol, which had been outfitted with a "sear switch" that converted it into a fully-automatic weapon capable of unloading 24 rounds in seconds.

Vick was arrested on the spot and released on a $6,000 bail. The night before his original trial in December 2024, he sliced off his GPS ankle monitor and fled to Georgia. Authorities tracked him down six months later and dragged him back to Massachusetts in chains.

A Suffolk Superior Court judge this week handed down the only sentence the law allowed for a habitual offender: life in prison. He'll be eligible for parole in 15 years.
