You have a town/base which you build up and improve by going out and doing adventures, gathering resources as well as unique items/characters. I suppose there is a threat to the town, which are you are trying to prepare for.

So… an adventure game with a town phase and tower defense leading to a final battle. Even better if it also includes some dungeon diving. Ideally not a campaign game.
