Someone tried to break into my room

Just got back from a 7-day trip to Negril, Jamaica through Sunwing. We stayed at Legends Beach Resort first and then later got moved to Samsara Resort. Overall, the trip ended up being memorable and we still enjoyed parts of Jamaica, but there are some things I genuinely think people should know before booking.

When we first arrived at Legends, the beach side looked beautiful and the food throughout the trip was honestly amazing. Jamaican food was probably one of the best parts of the vacation. The jerk chicken, patties, oxtail, rice and peas, everything was great. The beach sunsets were also unreal.

We stayed on the garden side of Legends initially, and this is where I think people need to manage expectations a bit. The garden side did not feel secure at all compared to the beach side. There’s visible security around the beach entrance, but around the garden side there were constantly random people hanging around outside the property offering marijuana, mushrooms, brownies, taxi rides, etc. Most people leave you alone if you firmly say no, but some can definitely be pushy or aggressive with trying to get your attention.

One thing I really want to warn people about is transportation. Personally, after my experience there, I would strongly recommend only using transportation arranged through your resort, Sunwing, or Nexus Tours. There are a lot of unofficial taxi drivers around the resort areas and some of them gave off sketchy vibes.

The biggest issue happened on one of the nights at Legends. Around 10:40 PM, while we were asleep in our room, someone started knocking on our door and windows. At first we thought maybe it was confusion or someone drunk, but it continued for around 15 minutes. The person was checking the windows and slowly trying to open the door while we were inside the room pretending to stay quiet.

We called police multiple times and honestly that experience was frustrating too because the dispatcher kept hanging up on us and seemed like she didn’t believe us when we said someone was actively trying to break into our room. Eventually police did arrive, and when they showed up, the suspect ran away from them.

That night was honestly terrifying. We ended up barricading our hotel room door with furniture because there was no way to directly contact security overnight and the front desk was closed at the time. We barely slept.

Now, to give credit where it’s deserved, the way the resort owner handled the situation the next morning completely changed my opinion of management. The owner personally came to speak with us, apologized sincerely, reviewed CCTV footage, cooperated with police, and offered to move us to Samsara Resort free of charge along with transportation.

After moving to Samsara, the trip got way better. Samsara felt significantly safer, quieter, more private, and much more relaxing overall. We were finally able to enjoy the vacation properly after that. If I ever returned to Negril personally, I would choose Samsara over the garden side of Legends without hesitation.

A few honest tips for future travelers:
- Bring mosquito spray because we definitely had mosquitoes in the room at Legends.
- Bring around $300-$400 USD cash because Jamaica is very tip-oriented and a lot of smaller vendors only take cash.
- Expect people to approach you often around tourist areas selling things or offering rides.
- Stay polite but firm with vendors.
- Be careful with transportation and avoid random taxi offers outside the resort.
- If security and peace of mind are important to you, I’d strongly recommend staying somewhere with more controlled access/security presence.

Overall, Jamaica itself is beautiful. The beaches, weather, food, and scenery were amazing, and most of the actual resort staff were friendly and welcoming. Our trip had a really rough and scary moment, but I do think the resort owner handled the aftermath professionally and genuinely tried to make things right afterward.
