I was going down a rabbit hole on U.S. presidential assassination attempts and found that some of the strangest ones are the ones that didn’t work.

For example, Andrew Jackson’s would-be assassin had two pistols misfire, and Jackson responded by attacking him with a cane. Theodore Roosevelt got shot in the chest, then still went on to give a long speech. Gerald Ford had two separate attempts on his life within just a few weeks.

What stood out to me is how different the motives were too. Some were political, some were tied to delusions or obsessions, and some were just completely irrational. It makes for a very strange look at presidential history that usually gets overshadowed by the successful assassinations everyone already knows about.
