I bought a 2000 Chevy Suburban 1500 with 216k miles a couple months ago off Facebook marketplace. I changed the spark plugs and did an oil change. I didn’t do an inspection bc I was acting quick, and I only paid $1600. I took it to a mechanic to get it inspected before I move my family across the country in about 6 weeks. I read how long they last, knew I could fit a bunch of stuff, and fit my 4 kids when I need to.

The mechanic said my front suspension is shot (I could feel it after driving for a couple weeks), it’s leaking oil (oil pan gasket), and knock sensors need replaced. I have quotes for $2700-$3200 worth of work that “needs to be done.” The engine, transmission, and frame all look good they said.

If I fix it, get all the work done, will it last me at least a year without needing major repairs? Is this the start of a money pit? Should I just get out of it now?

My wife and I have a minivan, so I could get away with a smaller car, but I like the capability this car affords, and I can’t afford a newer model. I’m not a very handy guy, I had friends teach me how to do the spark plugs and oil. Trying not to take on debt for a new car, but I also don’t want to spend my whole savings to fix a 26 year old vehicle. Thoughts? I appreciate the help in advance, and thank you for taking the time to read my scattered thoughts.
