I don't know if this is a hot take but Movie Knuckles is the best iteration of the character in the franchise.
This Knuckles is incredible well written and has a lot of heart to him. Even though he's still a powerhouse and still has anger issues he's not incredibly dumbed down like other versions of the character and he's not treated as a joke.
