Struggling with an 8bitdo M30 controller with Retroarch

Hey everyone,

I’m having a rough time getting RetroArch to map my 8BitDo M30 correctly when it’s paired to a Windows 11 mini PC using the 8BitDo USB Adapter 2. This is all running on a miniPC with the latest version of LaunchBox as well.

I’ve gone through a bunch of posts here and tried just about everything people suggested, but no luck so far.

Here’s what I’ve tried:

Switched between X-input, Android, and Switch modes on the M30
Updated firmware on both the controller and adapter
Made sure RetroArch is fully updated, including controller profiles
Set the controller to a 6-button Mega Drive/Genesis layout in RetroArch
Tried remapping to the suggested bindings

Half the time, the D-pad doesn't work, and half the time half the buttons don't work.

Is there a straightforward, step-by-step way to get this controller properly mapped and saved as the default for Genesis cores?
