Water fountains in Rome

This is probably a really boring post! But I’ve used the free water fountains several times to fill up my bottle, seems like such a waste that they just run freely all day long. I’m from the UK, we only have to have a week of no rain and we get hose pipe bans put in place. I’m guessing they must have an abundance of clean fresh water here or a fancy and quick way of recycling it? I also noticed in our hotel in the bar they just left the tap on constantly.
