When can I file bankruptcy again?

I filed Chapter 7 back in July 2018.

Is the 8 year waiting period from the date you filed or the date of discharge?

I went through several job losses and series of financial hardships relating to unexpected health issues over the past few years.

Also, does it look bad or strange if you look into filing days after the 8 year waiting period. Is there a certain amount of time to wait since I do not want things to look questionable.

I know there are likely a lot of people falling on hard times with the job market and layoffs being the way they have been the past few years.

Life happens and I would love to hear from people who have filed several times.

How much do bankruptcy lawyers charge?

Trying to understand the cost vs benefit of filing bankruptcy, especially for smaller debt amounts.

From what I’ve seen, attorney fees and filing costs can vary quite a bit depending on location and chapter, but it raises a bigger question:

  • At what point does the cost of filing bankruptcy actually make financial sense?
  • Is there a general debt range where people tend to consider it “worth it”?

Also curious about current, real-world ranges:

  • What are people actually paying for Chapter 7 vs Chapter 13 lately?
  • Are payment plans for legal fees common?

Would be helpful to hear how people evaluate whether filing is the right move from a numbers perspective.

Can I file bankruptcy on credit cards?

I am trying to understand how bankruptcy works when finances, assets, or living arrangements overlap with family.

A few areas that seem unclear from general explanations:

Family Property & Shared Ownership:

  • If someone is listed on a property title with family members but doesn’t financially contribute to it, how is that treated?
  • Can a bankruptcy filing impact other people tied to that asset like parents or siblings or is it isolated to the individual filing?

Vehicles and Essential Assets:

  • How are financed vehicles typically handled, especially if they’re needed for work?
  • What factors determine whether they’re kept or at risk?

Timing of the Filing:

  • Does it matter whether accounts are current, late, or already in collections before filing?
  • Is there any strategic timing that tends to make a difference and how is that looked at?

If anyone has insight into how these factors are looked at, that would be appreciated!
